STORYLINE
Rock got no reason; rock got no rhyme…you better get me to school on time!

School of Rock is based on the hit movie and follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who
decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school.

There he turns a class of straight-A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock
band but can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s
headmistress finding out?

CHARACTERS
DEWEY FINN
Age 25-40. Tenor. Must be able to play guitar competently. An overly ambitious, rock-obsessed
under-achiever. A highly energetic & comedic role. Improvisation skills desirable.

ROSALIE MULLINS
Age 25-40. Soprano (belt). An uptight & highly-strung headmistress of an elite school, called Horace
Green. Driven by success and prestige. However, inside lives a caged rock n roll lover!

NED SCHNEEBLY
Age 25-40. Baritone. (Rock voice preferred.) Substitute teacher & former band member of Dewey’s
band (‘No Vacancy’). Ned has decided to take ‘the responsible’ road in life and has given up his
dream of becoming a rock legend. Desperate for the approval of his partner (Patty), even if it goes
against his core beliefs.

PATTY Di MARCO
Age 25-40. Mezzo-soprano. (Strong belt.). The loving but dominating partner of Ned, Patty is
constantly trying to mold Ned into the person she thinks he should be. Hates Dewey and wants him
out of her and Ned’s life.

MRS SCHEINKOPF
Age 35-50. Pop-rock singer who moves well. Mrs Scheinkopf has been at Horace Green for as long as
anyone can remember. Her years of service have not softened her.

THE KIDS
All children must be between the ages of 10 & 15, but we may stretch to slightly older as long as they
look young. Children of all ethnicities & cultural backgrounds are welcome to apply. All roles are
open to everyone, regardless of gender.

SUMMER HATHAWAY Pop singer with ability to move well. Highly intelligent, over-achieving &
overtly controlling Horace Green student, with a commanding presence. Holds high expectations &
standards for herself and everyone around her. Suspicious of Dewey and his unorthodox teaching
ways.

TOMIKA Must have a strong singing voice. A new student at Horace Green, both her fathers are
failing to see that she is struggling to fit in. Withdrawn and shy but with an underlying enthusiasm &
desire to be part of the band, Tomika blows everyone away when she sings.

3
ZACK MOONEYHAN Guitarist – pop/rock vocals. Must be able to move well, and seriously rock at
guitar with some serious solo skills. A highly gifted musician & songwriter, but struggles to connect
with his overbearing, workaholic father.

FREDDIE HAMILTON Pop/rock singer with exceptional drum skills & personality. A boy who is happy
to be ‘released’. This is a kid who comes from a working-class background, and unlike many of his
classmates – he was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His father (who is not happy about
Freddy’s obsession with music) never lets him forget his background.

KATIE Bass guitarist – pop/rock vocals with ability to move well. Distinguished by her talent for the
bass guitar, Katie takes to being in the band like a fish to water. Energetic, enthusiastic, with a lot of
rhythm and attitude.

LAWRENCE Piano/keyboard – pop/rock vocals & good mover. Epic keyboard skills are a must. A shy,
awkward boy, unconfident, gauche, but a genius on the keyboard who needs a free spirit like Dewey
to lead him out of the darkness.

MARCY & SHONELLE Pop/rock vocals & good mover. Back-up singers with style.

BILLY SANDFORD Pop/rock singer & confident mover. A boy with a marked artistic flair.

SOPHIE Pop/rock vocals & good mover

MASON WARD Pop/rock vocals & good mover

JAMES Pop/rock vocals & good mover

MADISON Pop/rock vocals & good mover

ADULT ENSEMBLE
An adult ensemble will play the remaining roles, parents, and teachers, with cast expected to fill
multiple roles where possible. Ensemble members will need great characterisation and comedic
skills, some basic movement ability & strong vocal abilities. While some roles may be suitable for
individuals aged between 20 & 30, the roles of each of the parents are intended to be for ages 30+.

NON-ACTING ROLES
THEO, DOUG, BOB & SNAKE (On-stage band, ‘No Vacancy’) – competent musicians, age range 25-40.
