FREEMIUM - 11th JEE - Hinglish - Valence Bond Theory - 53

Valence Bond Theory describes chemical bonding between atoms in terms of overlapping atomic orbitals. When two atoms approach each other, attractive forces bring them close while repulsive forces push them apart, resulting in a potential energy curve with a minimum energy at an equilibrium bond distance. Covalent bonding occurs through positive overlapping of appropriately oriented atomic orbitals, with each orbital containing one electron of opposite spin. This shared pair of electrons forms a sigma bond along the internuclear axis through head-on overlapping of orbitals. Valence Bond Theory also describes coordinate or dative bonds formed when one atom donates both electrons in the shared pair.
