Introduction To Algebraic Structures

The document is an exam for an introduction to algebraic structures course. It contains 6 problems: 1) Define and illustrate binary operations, abelian groups, and integral domains; 2) Determine if operations define binary operations on sets; 3) Complete an operation table, verify group properties for a set with an operation, prove a property of identities in groups, show a set is a cyclic group, and show a set forms a ring and integral domain. Students must solve these problems demonstrating their understanding of key concepts from the course.

Introduction to Algebraic Structures

Final Exam
July 22, 2023

I. Define and illustrate by giving one example.

1. Binary operation
2. Well defined operation
3. Abelian group
4. Integral domain

II. Determine whether or not the definition of * does give a binary operation on the given set. If * is
not a binary operation, state which condition is not satisfied.
1. On Z+, define * by a * b = a – b
2. On Z+, define * by a * b = 2ab
3. On Q, define * by a * b = ab/2

III. Solve the following problems completely.

1. Complete the table below so as to define a commutative binary operation * on the set S = {a, b,
c, d}.

* a b c d
a a b c
b b d c
c c a d b
d d a

2. Verify the properties of a group for the set Q+ with * defined by a * b = ab/2. Is the
group abelian?
3. Prove that In a Group G with operation *, there is only one identity e such that e * x = x * e = x.
4. Show that the set Z15 under the operation addition modulo 15 is a cyclic group. Find the
generators of the cyclic group.
5. Show that the set S = {a + b√ 2 : a, b ∈ Z } forms a ring with respect to the ordinary
operations of addition and multiplication of numbers. Is the set an integral domain?
Justify.
6. Show that Z7 is a field.
