BuildingSMART DataModel Standards

BuildingSMART develops open standards for building information modeling (BIM) through collaborations with international standardization bodies. The organization's standards include the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data model, Model View Definitions (MVDs), and the Information Delivery Manual (IDM). BuildingSMART is working to publish IFC4 as a full International Standard to further improve interoperability in the construction industry.

 Develop and maintain open international standards for Building Information Modeling
 Collaborates with international and national standardization bodies
[buildingSMART Goals] – signed MoU's (and maintains A-liaison with):
• ISO TC184/SC4 for data model standard IFC
• ISO TC59/SC13 for other standards (process, terms, BIM guidance, etc.)

buildingSMART open data standards
 IDM (Information Delivery Manual) is the source of user requirements
 includes Process Map and Exchange Requirements
 IFC is the source of all technical specifications
 open BIM Collaboration Format oBCF enables communication of change requests
 MVD (Model View Definition) is a (formal) subset of IFC
 to satisfy particular exchange requirements defined in IDM

IFC4 – buildingSMART data standard for tomorrow

 today: IFC4 Release Candidate 3

buildingSMART data standards | Thomas Liebich | 27-Oct-2011

IFC4 as full ISO standard

 today: IFC2x Publicly Available Specification ISO/PAS 16739

 tomorrow: IFC4 Full International Standard ISO 16739 (summer 2012)
 right now:
 IFC4 RC2 – Committee Draft CD accepted
 IFC4 RC3 – Draft International Standard DIS in preparation

buildingSMART data standards | Thomas Liebich | 27-Oct-

2011
Prospect

 IFC4 = ISO 16739  the next step to openBIM

 More and better support for interoperability in construction

– Additional use cases supported

– Higher efficiency for the support of existing use cases

 Will be available as EXPRESS and XML schema

– full IFC schema used for general BIM exchange requirements

– simple ifcXML schema support added for simpler exchange requirements

 Expect first implementations in 2013

buildingSMART data standards | Thomas Liebich | 27-Oct-2011

Some facts ...

 5 years of development

 ~ 8 person/year direct development effort

– Time spend in buildingSMART International Model Support Group
(50% volunteered)

– More spend by external reviewers, project development teams, bSI community

 > 1200 issues / proposals / change requests handled

– All are logged and are traceable at http://www.iai-tech.org/jira

– Each contributing to better coverage, higher quality, more precise documentation

 secure IFC as the true openBIM standard worldwide

buildingSMART data standards | Thomas Liebich | 27-Oct-2011

IFC4 Major improvements – an extract – 1

 Consistency throughout the IFC schema

– Same concept, same modeling style
– Reduction of the “multiple ways to do”
– Symmetrical specialization trees

 Complete the building / building service

element catalogue
– Adding missing element types (like shading device,
solar device, burner, communication appliance, or
electric distribution board
– General overhaul of the building service and control
definitions, and of port connectivity
