ABSTRACT
Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures conicins two standards and their commentaries:
Building Coxe Requitements for Masanry Structures designated as TMS 402-16 (and formerly designated as TMS 402/ACT
S30/ASCE 5) and Specifieation for Masonry Structures designated as TMS 602-16 (and formerly designated as TMS
‘GO2/ACT 530.1/ASCE 6). These standards are produced by ‘The Masonry's Society's Commiuee TMS 402/602 and were
formerly developed through the joint sponscrship of The Masonry Society (TMS), the American Concrete Institute (ACI),
and the Structural Engineering Tastiute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (SEUASCE) through the Masonry
Standards Joint Committee (MSIC), In late 2013, ACI and ASCE relinquished theie rights to these standards to TMS who
Inas served as the ead sponsor of de Standards for a mumber of years. Since then, ihe Committee has operated solely under
the sponsorship of The Masonry Society, and the Committee's name, and the names of the standards, were re-designated.
“The Code covers the design and constriction of masonry structures while the Specification is concerned with minimus
construction requirements for masonry in stuctures. Some of the topics covered in the Code are: definitions, contact
documents; quality assurance; materials; placement of embedded items; analysis and design, strength ane srviceabilicy’
flexoral and axial loads; shear; details and development of reinforcement; nals; columns, pilasters; beams and lintels,
seismic design requirements pass unit masorey, veneers; an antoclaved aerated concrete mascnry. An empirical design
rethod and a preseripive: method applicable, to buildings meeting specific location and construction criteria arc also
included. The Speciieaion covers subjects such 2s quality assrance vequirements for materi; the placing, bonding and
anchoring of masonry, and the placernen of grout and of reinforcement. Ths Speciation is mean tbe medified and
referenced inthe Project Manual. The Chae js writen as legal document andthe Speciticaon as a master specification
required by the Code. The commentaries presen background dol, commie considerations, and research data used 0
develop the Code and Specifeaton.“Phe Commentaries sre wot manalory and ur for informexion of the user only

About the Committee, TMS 402/602
TMS 402/602 Committee
TMS 402/602 is a committee of The Masonry Society tasked with the maintenance of the Building Code
Reguirements for Masonry Structures (TMS 402), Specification for Masonry Structures (TMS 602) and their
companion Commentaries. The Committee was formerly designated as the Masenry Standards Joint Committee
(MSIC) and was sponsored by The Masonry Society (TMS), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the
Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (SEVASCE). In late 2013, ACH and
SEVASCE generously relinquished their rights t the siandards to stcamline Committee Operations and 10
support The Masonry Society’s efforts to advance the knowledge of masonry. The Committee was accordingly
designated more simply as TMS 402/602 to recognize the two standards it develops.
The mission of TMS 402/602 is 0 develop and maintain design and construction standards for masonry for
reference by oF incorporation into model building codes regulating masonry construction. In practice, TMS
402/602 is responsible for the maimtenanee of the Building Code Requirements for Maconry Structures (TMS
402), Specification for Masonry Structures (TMS 602) and their companion Commentaries. Committee
membership is open to all qualified individuels, within the constraints of balance requirements, balloting
Scherliles and particular needs for technical expertise. Committse meetings are open to the public.
Committee Activities include:
|, Evaluate and ballot proposed changes to existing standards of the committee.
2, Develop and ballot new standards for masonry.
3. Resolve Nepative votes from ballt items,
4, Provide interpretation of existing standards of the Committee,
5. Kentify reas op rnged ysis Yeo from jessica yeo@[Link] on 2722/2021

About The Masonry Society
‘Advancing the knowledge of masonry
‘The Masonry Society (TMS) was founded in 1977 as a noteforprofit professional, technical, and educational
association dedicated to the advancement of knowledge on masonry. Today TMS is an international gathering of
people interested in the art and science of masonry, and its members include design engineers, architects, builders,
researchers, educators, building officials, material suppliers, manufacturers, an others who want to contribute to and
benefit from the global pool of knowledge on masonry.
‘TMS gathers and disseminates technical information through its committees, publications, codes and standards,
nowsletter, refereed journal, educational programs, workshops, scholarships, disaster investigation team, ancl
conferences, The work of TMS is conducted by individual TMS members and through the volunteer committees
composed of both members and non-member.

1.1.2 Governing building code
This Code supplements the legally adopted building
code and shall govern in matters pertaining to structural
design and construction of masonry. In areus without &
legally adopted building code, this Code defines the

AL Minionan requirements
This Code governs siructural design of both
stractural and non-structural masonty. Examples of non=
sinictural masonry are masonry veneer, glass unit
masonty, ond masonry partitions. Structural design
aspects Of non-sirvetural masonry include, but are not
Jimited to, gravity and lateral support, and load transfer
4 supporting members
‘Masonry structures may be required to have enhanced
structural integrity ay part of a comprehensive design
Against progressive collapse due to accident, misuse,
sabotage oF other causes, General design puidance
addressing this issue is available in Commentary Section
1.4 of ASCE 7. Suggestions from that Commentary, of
specific application to many masonry structures, include

use of load-bearing interior walls; adequate continuity of |
svalls, tics, and joint rigidity, providing walls capable of
beam action; ductile detailing and the use of

COMMENTARY
4.2—Contract documents and calculations
he provisions for preparation of project drawings, project
-pecifcaions and issue of permits aren general, consistent
‘with those of most legally adopted building codes and are
Jere as supplements to those codes.
‘This Code is not intended to be made a part of the
‘contract documents, The contractor should not be required
through contract documents to assume responsibility for
esign (Code) requirements, unless the construction entity
is acting in a design-build capacity.
‘Thig Code lists some of the more important
formation that rust be included in the project
drawings oF project specifications, This is not an all-
inclusive list, are additional items may be required by the
building official
1.2.2 Masonry design performed in accordance with
engineered methods is based on the specified compressive
‘tengih ofthe masonry, For engineered masonry, structural
adequacy of masonry construction requites that the
compressive strength of masonry equals or exceeds the
specified sirensth, Masoncy design by prescriptive
approaches elies on rules and masonry compressive
‘steengih need not be verified.
1.2.5 The contrast documents must accurately reflect
design requicements, For example, joint snd opening,
locations assumed in the design should be coordinated with
lecations shown on the drawings,
1.24 Verification that masonry construction
feanforns 10 the conimct documents i¢ required hy this
Code, A program of quality assurance must be included in
the contract documents to satis this Code requirement.
