Lesson

Our lesson for today on the Fruit of Spirit is Self-control. What is Self-control? Self-control is
being in charge of your emotions, thoughts and your actions. Self-Control actually means “in
strength” in another language, called Greek. It’s not easy to have self- control, it is hard work,
but if we stop for a moment and ask the Holy Spirit for help, He can give us the strength to
use kind and loving words instead. Let’s look at how Jesus overcame temptation by the devil
in the book of Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13.

Discussion Questions

1. What is self-control?

Self-Control is saying no to the things that are not good for me and yes to what is good for
me. It means listening and acting how God wants me to rather than reacting or doing what I want to do.

2. What did Jesus say about Self-control?

Jesus is the greatest example of self-control! The bible teaches us that Jesus was tempted
by the devil to respond using His emotions and to not trust God’s promises. Instead of giving in and
making a bad choice, Jesus shows us how to have self-control by stopping and answering the devil
with the word of God every time!

3. How can we show that we can control ourselves?

It hurts when people say mean things to us. But we can use self-control in times like that.
Jesus didn’t yell back at the people. He used self-control, and we can, too. God will help us say no to
wrong choices, like saying mean things back when someone is being unkind.

Memory Verse
Romans 12:2- Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your
mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and
perfect.
