M&E Tutorial 1

This document defines key concepts related to thermal conductivity and heat transfer through building materials. It provides equations for thermal resistivity, conductive heat flow, thermal resistance, and U-value. It then gives examples of calculating conductive heat flow through a brick wall and the total thermal resistance and U-value of a multi-layer wall. Finally, it asks the reader to determine the average U-value of a composite wall structure.

Mechanical and Electrical System (BFC 32602)

Tutorial 1 (22.10.18)

1. Define thermal conductivity (k value).

2. Thermal conductivity (k value):
Rubber: 0.16 W/m.k vs wood: 0.10 W/m.k.
Which one of the above will provide better material resistance from heat flow? Justify your
reason.
3. Show the equation for the following variables (include their measurement unit)
a. Thermal resistivity (r)
b. Conductive heat flow (q)
c. Thermal resistant (R)
d. U value
4. Given
a. Thickness of brick wall = 150 mm
b. Surface area = 1 m2
c. Temperature difference between external and the internal surface = 4°C
d. Thermal conductivity of brick = 1.2 W/m.k
By neglecting the effect of surface resistance (air), calculate the conductive heat flows
through the brick wall.

5. Given
Layer of wall Material K value (w/m.k) Thickness (mm)
Layer 1 Mortar 0.29 25
Layer 2 Brick 1.2 100
Layer 3 Mortar 0.29 25

a. By neglecting the effect of surface resistance, calculate the total thermal resistance (RT)
of the wall
b. Then, calculate the U value of the wall.
Please include the measurement unit for your answer.

6. A portion of wall (as shown below) which is facing west in direction. Composition of the wall
includes 20 mm glass window (R=0.9 m2oC/W) and 150 mm of brick wall (λ=0.0.65 W/m oC)
covered with 15mm thick cement plaster (λ = 0.20 W/ moC) finishes on both sides.
Determine the average U-value for the wall.

7. Answer the quiz (page no.60) in the lecture note.
