Solid Figures Lesson Plan for Grade 6

1. The lesson plan details teaching students about solid figures through various activities including identifying figures, reviewing differences between solid and plane figures, presenting examples, and an application activity. 2. Key objectives are for students to visualize and describe solid figures, differentiate them from plane figures, and illustrate solid figures using pictures and models. 3. Example solid figures that will be presented and discussed include rectangular prisms, cubes, pyramids, cylinders, cones, spheres, and their characteristics such as number of faces, edges, and vertices.

Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 6

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to

A. visualize and describe the different solid figures;
B. differentiate solid figures from plane figures;
C. illustrate solid figures using various pictures and realia models.

Il. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Solid Figures

Good morning sir! We're
you today ? That is good.
fine sir!
Please stand and let us pray.

Who is absent today?

Great! Everybody is present.

4.Review
Class look at this graphic organizer. Let us examine
carefully the difference between plane figure and
solid figure. Who will give his/her observation about
solid figures and plane figures?

5. Motivation

Class, let’s have an activity entitled Guess Me! Here

are the rules.
1. I will group the class into 4.
2. As I remove pieces from the mystery picture, you
have the chance/s to raise the hand banner that I will
be giving you.
3. The first to raise the hand banner will give their
guess. If it is correct, they will be given 1 point.
4. If the first group to raise have incorrect answer, the
group have chances to win the point.
5. The group that have more points will be the
winner.
Yes Sir!
Class, do you understand? All group members
should cooperate.

and solid figures.
Look at this, this paper is a plane figure. It has floor
length and width. Will you give an example of plane
figure?

You’re right class!

This is also an example of solid figure. This is 3

dimensional. It occupies space. It has length, width
and height.

Will you give an example of solid figure? Cube,

cone,

Very good class!

Class, look at this box. This is a solid figure or a

plane figure? Let us examine it carefully.

The shape at the bottom and on the top is rectangle.

The back and front faces are rectangle. The right
and left side has the same shape which is also a
rectangle. The name of this is rectangular prism.

A prism is a polyhedron that has 2 congruent

parallel faces called bases. A prism is named
according to the shape of its base.

Let us define first what is a polyhedron? A

polyhedron is a solid figure whose sides are all
polygons.

The name polygon comes from the word “poly”

which means many and “gon” means angles. A
polygon is a closed plane figure which is a union of
line segments.

Class, these are examples of polygon.

The sides of this box are called faces. Line segments

where 2 faces meet is called edge/edges. Two edges
that intersect in a point is vertex/vertices or w

Class this solid figure is a rectangular prism because

its bases are rectangles. The rectangular prism has 6
faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges.

Let’s have another. This is a cube. How many faces

this solid figure have? Come in front and show us. 6 faces
Correct! Cube has 6 faces. 12 edges
How about its edges?
Very good! A cube has 12 edges.

How many vertices?

Very good! 8 vertices

Let us go to the next type of solid figure which is

pyramid. A pyramid is a polyhedron whose base is a
polygon and the lateral faces are triangles. It is
named according to its base.

This is an example of pyramid. Its base is a square

and it has a triangular face.
What kind of pyramid of this class? Square
pyramid
Very good !

Come in front and show us the number of its faces, There are 5 faces, 8 edges and 5
edges and vertices. vertices.

Very good!
Can you give an example of pyramid?
Triangular
That’s right class! pyramid
Hexagonal
Class what kind of solid figure is this? pyramid
Cylinder
sir!

Correct! It is a cylinder. This is also a 3D. It has 2

circular bases and 1 circular face.

This is a cone. How many face/faces , edges, and

vertex class?

This is another solid figure named cone. I circular

Come in front and show us its face, vertex and edge. face

This is a sphere. Can you give a representation of a
sphere?
Globe
That’s right! Very good!

It is a 3-dimensional solid that has a center in its

interior which is the same distance from every point.
It has no definite base, edges and vertices. It has
only a curved surface.

7. Application
Class, you can now differentiate solid figures and
plane figures. Now , we will be having an activity.
Name the picture and answer YES if it is solid and
NO if it is plane.

1. Sphere, yes

2.
Cylinder,
yes

3.
Triangle,
no
