The Ocean
By Mairead Daugharty
The ocean is so big and wide,
I cannot see the other side.
Its sandy bottom far below
is too far down for me to go.
And yet from far and wide, the sea
sends her waves to visit me.

Take Me Out
to the Ball Game
By Lissa Rovetch • Art by Amy Wummer
“Let’s hold hands so we stick together,” said Dad,
looking for their seats in the giant baseball stadium.
“We’re really high up,” said Tex. “The players are
so far away, they’re hard to see!”
“If you look at that huge TV screen, you can
see everything,” said Arizona.

After they sat down, a man selling hot dogs
walked by. Mom bought everyone a hot dog.
As the teams started playing, Dad groaned.
“What happened?” asked Indi.
“Our batter struck out,” said Dad.
June 2018 7
In the middle of the seventh inning,
everyone stood up. Then the team’s mascot,
a furry seal, helped the audience sing
“Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
8 June 2018
Then the game started again. A few minutes later,
everybody cheered, and a foghorn made a loud sound.
“Now what happened?” asked Tex.
“Our team hit a home run!” Mom grinned.
“I like it when our team is winning,” said Indi.
“It’s nice,” said Dad. “But win or lose, a day at the
ballpark is always a blast!”

Humpty Dumpty’s
Eye “Egg-zam”
By Heidi Bee Roemer • Art by Pete Whitehead
Humpty Dumpty bumped into walls.
Humpty couldn’t see well at all.
12 June 2018
He squinted whenever he watched TV.
He held books close so he could see.
June 2018 13
Humpty Dumpty took an eye test.
He didn’t pass, though he tried his best.
The doctor said, “Well, it seems to me,
a pair of glasses will help you see.”
14 June 2018
Now Humpty doesn’t bump into walls.
He doesn’t squint or stumble or fall.
Glasses help him, at home and at school,
and Humpty’s “egg-cited” ’cause that’s so cool!

Meet Juan Toucan and Bebo Bear, best friends who live in New York City.
Bebo and Juan were strolling by the river in New York City.
They looked around.
“¡Mira, un barco de vela!” said Juan.
“I love sailboats! They can move with the wind,” said Bebo,
opening his arms and feeling the wind on his face.
20 June 2018
“¡Mira, un yate!” said Juan, pointing at a boat
gliding down the river.
“That yacht is going so smoothly,” said Bebo, and he
moved his hand like a boat skimming the waves.

“¡Mira, un helicóptero!”
said Juan.
“The blades on a
helicopter move fast,”
said Bebo. He moved in a
circle like the blades of a
helicopter until he got
a little dizzy.
“¡Mira, un avión!” said Juan, pointing at an airplane.
“I wonder where that plane is going,” said Bebo,
holding his arms like the wings of an airplane.
¡Mira, un helicóptero! ¡Mira, un avión! Yo puedo ayudar.

As they turned to walk home, Bebo said, “I wish I could
fly like an airplane.”
“Yo puedo ayudar,” said Juan. He asked Bebo to hold on
to his feet. Then Juan flapped his wings, and they both
hovered in the air for a few seconds.
“You helped me fly! Thanks, Juan!” said Bebo.

A rehabilitator is a person who helps
animals or people get better after a
sickness or an injury.
At Debra’s house, you might meet
a skunk, an opossum, a woodpecker,
rabbits, or other animals.
This baby skunk lost its mother.
Soon it will be big enough to live
on its own in the woods.
These animals were
all injured or separated
from their mothers.

Debra’s job keeps her busy.
Each morning and evening,
Debra feeds all the animals.
She spends lots of
time preparing food
and cleaning up.

There are always many chores to do,
but to Debra, it’s worth it!
