LET’S DIG IN
What is the meaning of “EXPANDED DEFINITION”?
Expanded definition also known
as extended definition explains the
meaning and
nature of something (word,
concept or object) that goes
beyond a dictionary definition.
When a complex term becomes
ambiguous/unclear, an expanded
definition could be
given to make it clearer and easier
to understand. It can be written in
one or more
paragraphs. (Concepcion Doyugan,
et. al.)
When a complex term becomes confusing or difficult to grasp, an expanded definition may be
provided to make it clearer and simpler to understand. This definition is sometimes referred to
as an extended definition or extended explanation. It may be written in a single paragraph or
several. (Concepcion Doyugan, et. al.)
Note: An expanded definition nearly generally begins with a formal/sentence
explanation and then adds meaning to a word or concept using a variety of other techniques.
There is no set guideline for how many approaches or procedures should be utilized to broaden
the meaning of a word. Any techniques that you deem relevant and applicable can be combined
in order to provide readers a clear understanding of the phrase being defined.
Formal definitions may serve as the "base" for expanded definitions in writing. The following
methods can be combined and applied when writing enlarged definitions.
