B. Reading Comprehension
2. Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (10 Marks)
It is bad to have food stuck between your teeth for long time as food attracts
germs which produce acid, and acid hurts your teeth. Flossing helps to remove this food.
This explains why flossing helps to keep your mouth healthy, but some doctors say that
flossing can be also good for your heart.
It may seem strange that something you do for your teeth can have an effect on
your heart. Doctors have some ideas about how flossing works to keep your heart
healthy.

2 Hello! English 3rd Secondary - Exams

One idea is that the germs that hurt your teeth can travel into blood and attack
your heart. Another idea is that when there are too many germs in your mouth, the body
tries to fight them, and the way the body fights these germs may weaken the heart.
Not every doctor agrees about these ideas. Some doctors think that the link
between good flossing habits and good heart health is only coincidence. A coincidence
is the occurrence of two or more things at one time apparently by mere chance. For
example, every time I wash my car, it rains. This doesn’t mean that when I wash my car, it
rains. Likewise, some doctors think that people who have bad flossing habits may have
heart problems, and people who have good flossing habits may have healthy hearts. The
theory that flossing your teeth helps to keep your body healthy might not be true. But
every doctor agrees that flossing is a great way to keep your teeth healthy. So even if
flossing doesn’t help your heart, it is sure to help your teeth.
Answer the following questions:
1. Flossing effectively helps to keep your mouth healthy by preventing ……………
a. germs from producing acid
b. food from entering your body
c. germs from entering your lungs
d. acid from removing your teeth
2. The underlined word “apparently” in the second paragraph means ……………… .
a. clearly b. easily c. seriously d. quickly
3. The underlined word “them” refers to …………………
a. germs b. teeth c. people d. doctors
4. The passage is mainly about …………………….
a. why doctors disagree about flossing
b. how to keep our teeth healthy
c. flossing by coincidence
d. flossing is the way to a healthy heart
5. …………….. doctors think that flossing has nothing to do with the heart.
a. All b. Some c. No d. Most
6. Which of the following words mean “fight”?
a. resist b. host c. spoil d. discourage
7. Suggest a title to the passage.
8. Are you for or against the idea that flossing keeps the heart healthy? Justify your
opinion.
9. Why is it important to remove food from your teeth?
