6. TECHrTICAL REQUIEtEMENTS:
6.1 Bars, For~in~s, and Flash Welded Rin~s:
~
6.1.1 Solution Heat Treatment: Heat to 1950 F+ 25 (1065. 6 C+ 14), hold at heat for 1- 2 hr, and cool at a
rate equivalent to air cool or faster.
6.1. 2 Hardness: Shall be not higher than Brinell 248 or equivalent.
6.1. 3 Grain Size: Shall average 3 or finer, as determined by comparison of a polished and etched specimen
with the chart in the issue of ASTM E112 listed in the latest issue of AMS 2350; grain size shall be sub-
[Link] uniform without pronounced segregation of fine and coarse grain areas, in accordance with
[Link] agreed upon by purchaser and vendor. In case of disagreement on grain size by the com-
parison method, the intercept (Heyn) procedure shall be used.
6.1.4 Properties After Precipitation Heat Treatment: The product shall conform to the following require-
ments after being precipitation heat treated by heating to 1400 F+ 15 (760 C+ 8.3), holding at heat for
10 hr, furnace cooling to 1200 F+ 15 (648.9 C+ 8. 3), holding at 1200 F+ 15 (648.9 C+ 8.3) until a
total precipitation heat treatment time of 20 hr has been reached, and cooled.
[Link] Tensile Properties:
[Link].1 Bars: Specimens shall be taken with the axis in the short transverse direction. If the short trans-
verse direction is less than 2-1/2 in. , specimens shall be taken with the axis in the long transverse
direction. If both transverse directions are less than 2-1/2 in. , specimens shall be taken with the
axis in the longitudina.l direction.
Tensile Strength, psi 180, 000 min
Yield Strength at 0. 2% Offset or at 0.0141 in. ~
in 2 in. Extension Under Load (E = 29, 600, 000), psi 150, 000 min
Elongation, % in 2 in. or 4D 10 min
Reduction of Area, %o 12 min
[Link].2 For~in~s and Flash Welded R,in~s: Specimens from forgings shall be taken with the axis in the
transverse direction. If the forging is less than 2-1/2 in. in the transverse direction, specimens
shall be taken with the a~cis in the longitudinal direction. Specimens from flash welded rings shall
be taken with the axis in the circumferential direction with specimens being taken both across the
weld and entirely from. parent meta,l.
Tensile Strength, psi 180, 000 min
Yield Strength at 0. 2% Offset or at 0. 0141 in.
in 2 in. Extension Under Load (E = 29, 600, 000), psi 150, 000 min
Elongation, %o in 2 in. or 4D 12 min
Reduction of Area, °/o 15 min
[Link] Hardness: Shall be not lower than Brinell 341 or equivalent.
6.2 Stock for Forein~ or Flash Welded Rin~s: When a sa,mple of stock is forged to a test coupon and solution
and precipitation heat treated as in 6.1.1 and 6.1.4, specimens taken from the heat treated coupon shall
conform to the requirements of [Link] and [Link]. If specimens taken from the stock after heat treat-
ment as in 6.1.1 and 6.1.4 conform to the requirements of [Link] and [Link], the test shall be ac-
cepted as equivalent to tests of the forged coupon.

7. QUALITY: Material shall be produced by multiple melting using consumable electrode practice in the re-
melt cycle unless otherwise permitted. If consumable electrode remelting is not performed in vacuum,
~ electrodes which have been produced by vacuum induction melting shall be used. The product shall be uni-
form in quality and condition, clean, sound, and free from foreign materials and from internal and external
imperfections detrimenta.l to fabrication or to performance of parts.
8. TOLERANCES: Unless otherwise specified, tolerances shall conform to all applicable requirements of the
latest issue of AMS 2261.
9. RE PORTS:
9.1 Unless otherwise specified, the vendor of the product shall furnish with each shipment three copies of a
report of the results of tests for chemical composition of each heat in the shipment and the results of
tests on each size from each heat to determine conformance to the technical requirements of this speci-
fication. .This report shall include the purchase order number, heat number, material specification
number, size, and quantity from each heat. If forgings are supplied, the part number and size of stock
and test results on material used to make the forgings shall also be included.
9.2 Unless otherwise specified, the vendor of finished or semi-finished parts shall furnish with each shipment
three copies of a report showing the purchase order number, material specification number, contractor or
other direct supplier of~material, part number, and quantity. When material for making parts is produced
or purchased by the parts vendor, that vendor shall inspect each lot of material to determine conformance
to the requirements of this specification, and shall include in the report a statement that the material
conforms, or shall include copies of laboratory reports showing the results of tests to determine con-
formance.
10 . IDE NT IF ICAT ION:
~ 10.1 Bars: Individual pieces or bundles shall have [Link] a meta.l or plastic ta.g embossed with the purchase
order number, AMS 5664, nominal size, and heat number, or shall be boxed and the box marked with the
same information. In addition to the above identification, flats 2 x 1 in. and larger and other bars 1 in.
and over in diameter or distance between parallel sides shall be stamped with the heat number within 2
in. of one end.
10.2 For~in~s: Shall be identified in accordance with the latest issue of AMS 2808. -
10. 3 Flash Welded Rin~s: Shall be identified as agreed upo:i by. purchaser and vendor.
10.4 Stock for For~in~s or Flash Weided Rin~s: Shall be identified as agreed upon by purchaser and vendor.
11. REJECTIONS: Material not conforming to this specification, or to authorized modifications will be subject
to rejection.
