Dynamics Assign One

The document contains 7 mechanics problems related to dynamics and kinematics for a 2nd year civil engineering class. The problems involve drawing velocity-time, position-time, and acceleration-time graphs; calculating total distance, times when an object passes through a point, maximum position, and time when an object reaches a given position; determining range for an object sprayed at an angle; calculating velocity, acceleration, and their components for objects moving along curved paths; and relating the velocities of two connected objects sliding along fixed rods.

Department of mechanical Engineering

Dynamics ind. assignment for 2nd year Civil Engineering

1. The v-t graph of a car while traveling along a road is shown. Draw the 𝑠 − 𝑡 and 𝑎 − 𝑡
graphs for the motion.

2. A particle moves in a straight line with velocity shown in the figure. Knowing that 𝑥 =
−12𝑚 at 𝑡 = 0

Draw the a-t and x-t graphs, and determine:

a) The total distance traveled by the particle when t=12s.

b) The two values of t for which the particle passes the origin.
c) The maximum value of the position coordinates of the particle.
d) The value of t for which the particle is at a distance of 15m from the origin.

3. Water is sprayed at an angle of 90° from the slope at 20 m/s. Determine the range R.

4. An object travels along a curved path as shown. If at the point shown its speed is 28.8m/s
and the speed is increasing at 8 m/s2 determine the direction of its velocity, & the
magnitude and direction of its acceleration at this point.

5. A particle is constrained to travel along the path. If 𝑥 = 4𝑡 4 (m), where t is in seconds,

determine the magnitude of the particle's velocity and acceleration when t = 0.5 s.

6. A particle moves along an Archimedean spiral 𝑟 = 8𝜃 𝑓𝑡, where, 𝜃 is given in radians.
If 𝜃̇ = 4 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 and (constant). Determine the radial and transverse components of the
particle's velocity and acceleration at the instant 𝜃 = 𝜋/2 rad. Sketch the curve and show
the components on the curve.

7. Collars A and B slides along the fixed rods are connected by a cord length 𝐿. If collar A
has a velocity 𝑉𝐴 = 𝑥̇ to the right, express the velocity 𝑉𝐵 = −𝑠̇ of B in terms of 𝑥, 𝑣𝐴 ,
and 𝑠.
