The study aimed to determine if lemon peel extract could be an effective insecticide against cockroaches. Lemon peels were extracted through distillation to obtain d-limonene. The extract was sprayed in two concentrations on cockroaches and a control group. After 12 hours, no cockroaches had died in any group. It was concluded that lemon peel extract was not effective at killing cockroaches within the test parameters. Future studies could use extracts with higher d-limonene concentrations or test on smaller insect pests.

Bg of Study

Cockroaches have been known to play a role as carriers of intestinal diseases,

such as dysentery, diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid fever. Cockroach bites can cause skin
irritation, infection, and swelling. You can commonly find cockroach in wall cracks,
behind or under furniture, below the sink, etc. Due to the problem of cockroach, the
researchers decided to search for an effective but environment-friendly killer. The
solution the researchers thought of are lemon peels because based on the study of
Lang (2019), lemon peels contain d-limonene. (5 sentences)
(Additional) The research of Karr et al., (1988) also used d limone as insecticidal
activity for German Cockroaches. Based on the study of Ibrahim et al. (2008), indicated
that bioactive limonene, in addition to its use as an insecticide to control ectoparasites,
also has activity against many insects. (2 sentences)

Signi of Study

Materials
 500 g lemon peels
 1000 mL distilled water
 (2) 30 mL Spray Bottle
 Stirring rod
 (3) 700L Jars with cap 15 cm diameter
 Eye protection

2.2 Procedures in Making the Product
1. Prepared all the materials.
2. Lemons were washed with tap water
3. Grated the lemons, use the 250 g of lemon peels and add to 500 mL of distilled
water in the 250 mL round bottomed flask.
4. Set up the distillation
5. Heat the flask so that distillation
6. Collect approximately 15 mL of distillate
7. Carefully pour 5 mL of the distillate to spray bottle 1 and pour 10 mL of the
distillate to spray bottle 2
8. Repeat the experiment 2 times

2.3 Procedures in Testing the Product

1. Gather 9 adult cockroach and separate them in three containers
2. Name the three containers container 1, container 2, and container 4
3. Add equal amount of egg trays in each container
4. In container 1, shake then spray about 5mL of the solution directly to the
cockroaches
5. In container 2, shake then spray about 10mL of the solution directly to the
cockroaches
6. In container 4, do not spray anything.
7. After 24 hours of application, the mortality rate would be computed by the formula
mortality rate = the number of dead cockroaches/overall population.

Analysis of Data

In each treatment, the testing was conducted with two different amounts of the
d-Limonene extract. With the results gathered, it was found that both of the different
amounts of the d-limonene were not effective against blattodea. After 12 hours of the
spraying process, the blattodea wasn't moving as pesky as it should be, but it was still
alive. The blattodea was still weak after 10 hours of the spraying process but again,
they were still alive. Based on the related studies, we had this kind of result due to the
lack of d-limonene.

Conclusions

After 12 hours of observing, no cockroaches died, the researchers can

conclude that Citrus limon (Lemon) peels cannot be an effective insecticide against
Blattodea (Cockroaches). After directly spraying 5 mL and 10 mL of d-limonene and
observing the cockroaches for 24 hours, there were 0 deaths. The d-limonene caused
the cockroaches to have slow mobility. The mortality rate of the cockroaches is 0%.
Therefore the researchers conclude that Citrus Limon (lemon) peels cannot be an
effective insecticide againt Blattodea (cockroaches), rejecting the hypothesis.

Recommendations

1. The researchers recommend to use cheaper citrus fruits with high amount of d-
limonene to be more effective.

2. Smaller pests are suggested by the researchers.

7. The researchers recommend soaking the peels for at least 2 – 3 minutes to

soften and is much easier to grate.
