Science7, Q4, Week1-6 (VALIDATED)

The document provides information about locating places on Earth using a coordinate system of latitude and longitude. It discusses how latitude is measured in degrees north and south of the equator, while longitude is measured in degrees east and west of the prime meridian. Key terms like equator, prime meridian, parallels of latitude, and meridians of longitude are defined. Examples of latitude and longitude coordinates for different cities in the Philippines are given.

Locating Places on Earth

ACTIVITY 1.1: Agree or Disagree?

Directions: Put a check (/) mark on the Agree column if you are in favor of the statements
presented. If you are not in favor, put a question (?) mark on the Disagree column.

No. Statement Agree Disagree

1 Latitude is an imaginary line that runs through the Earth’s
surface from West to East.
2 Equator serves as a reference point for measuring the
distance east or west, located at zero degree (0º).
3 All longitudes are perpendicular to the Equator.
4 As we move away from the Equator towards the Poles, the
length of the latitude increases.
5 Equator is the longest parallel that divides the Earth into two
hemispheres Northern and Southern.

ACTIVITY 1.2: What City Am I?

Directions: Write the names of the cities matching the coordinates on the blank space
provided. Refer to the map below.

Places on Earth
During the ancient times, locating places and telling directions depended largely on
observation of celestial objects such as: the position of the different constellations, the rising
and setting of the sun, the location of stars and many more.
People traveling were sure of themselves that they were heading north the moment
Polaris appeared in the sky. Hunters in the forest would know they were heading east because
they looked for the part of the sky where the sun rises. Long-distance travelers would locate
specific constellations to confirm that they were heading towards their target areas. This
system of navigation using heavenly bodies as bases is called celestial navigation.
At present, telling directions and locating places on Earth have been improved.
Modern navigation makes use of two imaginary lines that run from pole to pole and from
west to east of the globe. These imaginary lines are, respectively, the latitude and longitude.
Two starting points are used in locating places and telling directions on Earth. One is
the equator (or the prime parallel) that passes horizontally through the center of the Earth,
dividing the globe into northern and southern hemispheres. The other starting point is the
prime meridian, the vertical line that divides the Earth into western and eastern
hemispheres. The equator and the prime meridian are referred to as Great Circles.

Figure 1: The equator and the prime meridian are the two starting points used in locating places and telling directions.

Latitude
The north and south location of any place on Earth is called
latitude. Latitudes are marked by imaginary lines called
parallels of latitude drawn parallel to the equator. All parallels
of latitudes drawn between the equator and the North Pole have
northern latitudes, and those between the equator and the South
Pole have southern latitudes.

Figure 2: The parallels of latitude

Since the equator is the starting point in determining the latitude of a particular place,
it is designated as 00 latitudes. Thus, it is important to indicate the N or S after the degree unit.
The equator being the starting point does not have the N or S designation. Latitude
measurements range only from 00 to 900.

Figure 3: Some parallels of latitude

Longitude

The west or east location of any place on earth is called

longitude. Longitudes are marked by imaginary lines called
meridians of longitude drawn parallel to the prime meridian.
Because all meridians of longitudes are great circles, choosing
the prime meridian that will serve as the starting point is quite
difficult.

Figure 4. The meridians of longitude

Thus, facing north, the area at the right of the prime meridian is eastern hemisphere,
and the area at the left is western hemisphere. Likewise, it is important to indicate E and W
after the degree unit. However, the prime meridian (0 0) being the starting point and
International Date Line located halfway around the globe on the opposite side of the prime
meridian, does not have the E or W designation. Longitude measurements range only from 0 0
to 1800.

Meridians of longitude all converge and meet at the poles. Because of this, the east-
west distance between two meridians decreases as one moves toward the poles from the
equator. The space between two meridians is greatest at the equator by about 70 miles.

Latitude and Longitude Distance Measurements

Distances on Earth are expressed in angular measurement, so the unit called degree is
used. One degree of latitude or longitude is equal to 70 miles (112 km). each degree is
divided into equal parts called minute. A minute of latitude or longitude is equal to 70/60 or
1.1667 miles (also called a nautical mile). A minute is divided into equal parts called
seconds. A second of latitude or longitude is equal to 100ft.

The Philippines is a tropical country located in the northern hemisphere specifically at

13 00’00” North; 122000’00” East on the southern coast of the continent of Asia. Being part
0

of the Southeast Asia, the Philippines is also located between the equator and the Tropic of
Cancer. The archipelago is 4023’ and 21025’ northern latitude and between 116000’ and
127000’ eastern longitude. The Bashi Channel can be found at the northern part of the
Philippines, the Pacific Ocean on the east, the Celebes Sea on the south, and the West
Philippine Sea on the west. The nearest island in the southwest is Borneo, and the nearest in
the north is Taiwan. It is the second largest archipelago in the world with a total land area of
300,000 km2 divided into about 7,100 individual islands.

The Philippines, has many landforms and bodies of water. Landforms consist of
rugged hills, mountains, plains, plateaus, valleys, and peninsulas. These various types of
landforms compose the earth’s lithosphere. The Philippines, being an archipelago, is also
popular for the various bodies of water surrounding it, as well as inland bodies of water
composing its interior. These bodies of water compose the earth’s vast hydrosphere.

ACTIVITY 4.2: Missing My Favorite School

Directions: Think of your favorite elementary school (ONLY your

elementary school because you have not yet step on your Grade 7
school building) that you have missed so much because of pandemic.
Draw or illustrate it using all the details/information that you could
remember including the nearby houses, barangay hall, church or masjid,
market, roads, rivers, mountains and any remarkable landmarks. Draw it
inside the box below.

Note: Make your drawing/illustration presentable following the attached
