The research was entitled "The Effects of Cutting Classes to the Academic Performance of Grade 10 Students in New
Society High School" because they wanted to discern and take deep explorations concerning the behavior of different individuals,
particularly the grade 10 students who manage cutting classes, and how such decisions affect their academic performance. The
students need to understand how important it is to be present in class in order to gain a good education because they need it for
their futures. Students time in high school not only affects oneself in the future but also their families, and most importantly, they
know what the impact of cutting classes in their subjects can be.
Since there isn't enough time for growth and development, cutting classes for Grade 10 students at New Society National
High School is an issue. Their friends, family, and houses are where this development first begins. As a result, ditching classes will
be the solution to their issues. Thus, teachers and the school staff will face sorts of problems from their respective student such as
discomfort for any school teachers and staff. This paper reports findings from a qualitative study conducted with public Grade 10
students and guidance counsellors in the New Society National High School to find out how cutting classes is understood and
addressed. Our findings indicate that interactions between students and guidance counsellors are similar to negotiations. These
negotiations, however, are implicit rather than explicit. Explicit negotiations offer guidance counsellors a valuable tool for
collaboratively exploring cutting with all relevant parties, including students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Explicit
negotiations can examine underlying issues and conflict precipitating cutting, the social meaning that cutting has for this student,
desired outcomes, impediments to these outcomes, and then negotiation process itself. Not only can explicit negotiations aid
guidance counsellors learning about and responding to cutting more effectively, but they also can model effective, collaborative
problem solving for students and the larger school community.(Angela Nyawira Khaminwa, R. Kirk Fallis, Susan Opotow, 2016).
Cutting of classes is rampant in Philippines’ public schools for the reason that there is an inefficient security and relatively
high number of students that makes it hard for the school to monitor. Educational institutions are not only for mental sacrifice and
mental quotient feedback but also for correcting and disciplining any forms of behavior, moral, and social problems being faced by
the students. Problems have a sufficient period of growth and development. This development starts in the comfort of their homes
and families.. The researchers all know that this is the stage where most of the students are beginning to be curious about life. This
is where they start to come out from their “comfort zone” to explore life and make their own decisions. Not attending in class may
ruin one’s future and dreams. Cutting classes are not the right thing to do and if you have a problem with your school works or if
you are bored to attend class, think of ways that can avoid you to cut your class instead of planning to escape from class. Although
cutting classes is common, students should do their duty as a student. Students also should have positive attitude to do everything
even though they think that classes are boring, they are lazy to go to school, they should take the responsibilities for themselves
(Wu, 2013).
There are people out there who are willing to help you if you have a problem in school, especially your parents. According to
Malcom X, “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today”(Managa, 2016). It
became the habit of many students who have engaged on it. Yet it is a headache to all the teachers and staff. Students who
engaged in cutting classes has increased and needs to put a stop on it. There are several reasons why some of the students cut
class. Most of them do not attend their class because they get bored with the teacher's way of teaching the lesson, they don't like
the subject, or they don't want to see their terror teachers. Some say they are not prepared for the test or they are unable to finish
their requirements on time, and while others escape from classes just to play video games. Few say that it is their way of showing
rebellion to their parents And some others said they were not interested in school or studying. Those are just some pointless
excuses from students involved in cutting classes.
Parents were the ones who had earned money, the money they allot for their children's education is deliberately wasted by
the child. Teachers are also affected by the students performance, if it is found out that they lost a student during class hours, they
will be reprimanded, or worse, an accusation will be filed against them.
Therefore, in this study, the researchers want to understand that attending class is vital for a good education and a good
future. The attendance of students in class serves as a predictor of their success. The student's time in class affects not only
themselves in the present but also their families and teachers. But most importantly, attending class has a very high impact on a
student's future and on his or her academic performance.
