PART A (30 marks)
Answer ALL questions
1. (a) In an Experiment Z, one (1) mole of neon gas was placed inside a container at 1
atm pressure and 50 °C. The gas behaves ideally with y = 1.52. The gas is
allowed to expand reversibly and adiabatically to a pressure of 0.1 atm.
(■) Calculate the final temperature. [5 Marks]
(ii) Determine q, AU, w, AH and 21S for the process. [10 Marks]
(b) Experiment Z was repeated with two (2) moles of Y gas with equation of state as
follows and undergoes isothermal reversible expansion process from 10 dm3 until
25 dm3.

PART B (20 Marks)
Answer only ONE (1) question
1. The following data obtained from a mixture of volatile liquid of A and B. The boiling point
of pure liquid A and B are 397 K and 427 K, respectively.
T(K) 398 403 408 413 418 423
xa 0.91 0.65 0.45 0.3 0.18 0.098
Ya 0.99 0.91 0.77 0.61 0.45 0.25
(a) Plot a phase diagram of liquid-vapor for data above.
[7 Marks]
(b) At 410 K and composition of xa = 0.610, the amount of B in liquid phase is 3.2 g.
Calculate the total mass of B.
[8 Marks]
(c) Consider a mixture with composition xb = 0.35 was heated at 410 K. Explain the
concept of distillation.

2. (a) An adsorption experiment were carried out at 27 °C by using 100 mL of acetic acid
(adsorbate) and 1.00 g of activated carbon (adsorbent). The data were collected
after 3 days and fitted with Langmuir Isotherm. The surface area of activated
carbon was calculated is 2500 cm2 g-1.
(i) The maximum of acetic acid adsorbed on the activated carbon are 1.976 x
10’5 mol dm3. Find the surface occupied by one molecule of acetic acid (in
A2).
(ii) Determine the half-life of acetic acid on the surface of activated carbon if the
rate constant of adsorption are 1.12 x 10'3 s’1 which is twice the rate constant
of desorption.
[10 Marks]
(b) Briefly explain the following principles.
(i) Emulsion
(ii) Lyophilic sol
(iii) Tyndall effect
(iv) Liquid aerosol
(v) Electrophoresis effect
