Magnetic Flux and Force Calculations

1. The document provides instructions for a problem set with 5 questions about magnetic fields and flux. Students are to copy the questions, show their work, and box their final answers with 4 decimal places. 2. The questions calculate flux density from total flux and pole face dimensions, determine pole radius from total flux and flux density, find coil current from magnetizing force and circuit dimensions, and calculate force on a conductor from current, field orientation, and total flux.

Problem Set

Instruction: Copy the following questions below, The answer should be per number sequence.
Answer the following problems and round off ONLY in the final answer with four decimal places.
Box the final answer only.
Problem sets should be done in a long typewriting with cover page.

1. A magnetic pole face has a rectangular section having dimensions 200 mm by 100 mm. If the
total flux emerging from the pole is 150 µWb, calculate the flux density.
2. The maximum working flux density of a lifting electromagnet is 1.8 T and the effective area of a
pole face is circular in cross-section. If the total magnetic flux produced is 353 mWb, determine
the radius of the pole face.
3. A magnetizing force of 8000 A/m is applied to a circular magnetic circuit of mean diameter 30
cm by passing a current through a coil wound on the circuit. If the coil is uniformly wound
around the circuit and has 750 turns, find the current in the coil.
4. A section through a magnetic circuit of uniform cross-sectional area 2 cm2 is shown in Figure
7.5. The cast steel core has a mean length of 25 cm. The air gap is 1 mm wide and the coil has
5000 turns. The B–H curve for cast steel is shown on page 78. Determine the current in the coil
to produce a flux density of 0.80 T in the air gap, assuming that all the flux passes through both
parts of the magnetic circuit.
5. A conductor 350 mm long carries a current of 10 A and is at right-angles to a magnetic field lying
between two circular pole faces each of radius 60 mm. If the total flux between the pole faces is
0.5 mWb, calculate the magnitude of the force exerted on the conductor.
