Problem Set 4

The document contains solutions to statistics problems involving normal distributions. It finds probabilities and z-scores given information like mean, standard deviation, and ranges of a normal distribution. It calculates the number of patients that would fall under certain criteria based on data given about systolic blood pressure.

Problem Set No.4
Name: Reigar F. Francisco
Date: June 03, 2022

1. Find the probability and sketch the curve

(i) from z = 0 to z = 1.23.
P{z=1.23} is 0.1093
A=0.1093

-3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
Z=1.23

(ii) from z = 1.62 to z = 0.43.

A1=0.3336 A= A1+ A2= 0.526 + 0.3336

A2=0.0526 = 0.3862

P {z=1.62 to z=0.43} = 0.3862 or 38.62 %

-3 -2 -1 Z=0.43 1 2 3
Z=1.62

(iii) −0.15 < z < 2.38. A1= 0.5 – 0.4404= 0.0596

A2= 0.5 – 0.0087= 0.4913

A1=0.4404
A= A1+ A2= 0.596 + 0.4913 = 0.5509

A2=0.0087

P {−0.15 < z < 2.38} = 0.5509 or 55.09 %

-3 -2 -1 1 2 3

2. Find the z − score when

(i) the probability from z = 0 and −z is 0.4713.

A1= 0.5 – 0.4713 = 0.0287

z = -1.9
A=0.4713

-3 -2 -1 1 2 3
(ii) the probability to the right of +z is 0.1379.

A=0.1379 A1= 0.1379 – 0.5 = -0.3621

z = -1.0

-3 -2 -1 1 2 3

(iii) the probability to the left of +z is 0.8770.

A= 0.5 – 0.8770 = -0.377

A=0.8770
z = 1.1

-3 -2 -1 1 2 3

3. The average systolic pressure of the 200 patients in a certain hospital is 151 with
a standard deviation of 15. Assuming that it could be normally distributed, find
the number of patients who have systolic pressure:
(i) from 119 to 155.

Given: x= 119 and x= 155

x= 137
s= 15

119 – 137
z= x – x = = -1.2
s 15
155 – 137
z= x – x = = 1.2
s 15

A= A1+ A2= 0.3849 + 0.1151 = 0.5

A2=0.1151 A1=0.3849
0.5 (200) = 100 patients

-3 -2 -1 1 2 3

Z=-1.2 Z=1.2
(ii) less than or equal to 127.

Given: x= 185
x= 137
s= 15
185– 137
z= x – x = 15 = 3.2 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3
s
A= A1+ A2= -0.166 + 0.1151 = -0.1666
-0.1666 (200) = -33.32 0r 200 patients

(iii) greater than or equal to 185.

Given: x= 127
x= 137
s= 15

185– 137
z= x–x = 15 = 3.2
s -3 -2 -1 1 2 3

A= 0.5 – 0.4773 = 0.0007

0.0007 (200) = 0.4patients
