APPENDIX 2: WORKS ADMINISTERED/OWNED BY DYLAN

These works--mostly songs but including seven non-musical titles--although not created by Dylan,
are owned or co-owned by him and (most) are administered or co-administered by his companies Big
Sky Music, Dwarf Music, Four Aces Music, Special Rider Music, and Wild Rider Music.

ANIMALS ON A BIKE.
The title above is as given on the application; the Copyright Office Cacalog puts it in
brackets. Graphic designer Ria Lewerke has been responsible for creating album covers and
record labels for some of the biggest names in the music industry (e.g. ELO, Barry
Manilow, Matchbox 20, Lionel Ritchie, Diana Ross) and a few Dylan fellow travelers (Jerry
Garcia, Bob Neuwirth, Bob Weir). This is one of six Lewerke paintings created for Dylan
in 1978 (the others are "The Big D," "The Ducks," "The Elephant," "Lady On The Horse,"
and "The Wings"). The copyright data for the painting are:

BABY MAKE UP YOUR MIND.

The title above is as given in the document; the Copyright Office Catalog adds a comma
after "Baby." Special Rider Music has not filed a separate registration for this song but
it may have been copyrighted as part of either "For The Love Of You (A Collection)'' or
"Helena Springs Compilation 1985 #1" (see those entries below). No recording has been
documented. For more about the transfer see its entry in the main text. The data for the

Orig copyright: 25 September 1969, ©EU139660, [Canaan Music?).
Recorded by Levon & The Hawks in October or November 1964 and
released on the album The
Band: A Musical History (Capitol Records 72435-77409-06, 27 September 2005). As neither
Levon & The Hawks or The Band were associated with Big Sky Music, and, as per the
assignment "Blues For Breakfast & 13 Other Titles'' (see that entry in the main text), the
song should belong to Canaan Music, the probable explanation for its inclusion in the
transfers "Alberta #1 & 46 Other Titles (#1)" and "Alberta #1 & 46 Other Titles (#2)''
would be a clerical error. For more about the transactions see those entries in the main
text.

THE BIG D.
The title above is as given on the application; the Copyright Office Catalog puts it in
brackets. This is one of six paintings created by Lewerke for Dylan in 1978--for more
about her see "Animals On A Bike." The copyright data for the painting are:

The title above is as given on the application; the Copyright Office Catalog gives it as
"Danny O'Keefe '93--Accepted" (from the deposit copy?). Wild Rider Music, owned by Dylan,
administers the rights to songs that are part of his BM! affiliate's repertoire (only
"Well, Well, Well'' has been confirmed to have been co-written by him). In addition to
this compilation's 12 titles, Wild Rider also is given in the Catalog as a co-claimant
for six more titles listed in this appendix; seven other songs, none given in the Catalog
with Wild Rider as a co-claimant, have been confirmed.21 The contents are not given in the
Catalog's record but were provided in correspondence from the Copyright Office's

FOR THE LOVE OF YOU (A COLLECTION). Helena Springs

The title above is as given on the application; the Copyright Office Catalog gives it as
''For The Love Of You: A Collection." What this unpublished collection contains is
unknown. Responding to my query about its contents in a 9 December 1996 telephone
conversation, an employee of the Certifications And Documents Section of the Copyright
Office suggested that the Office may no longer have the deposit copy, that it may have
been "discarded'' (that would be highly irregular). Following up in 24 March 1997
correspondence a Section employee described the search results: "[When the work was)
retrieved from the ... Storage Unit, no lyric sheets, title pages, or index of titles was
attached .... Upon examining the [application], no individual titles were listed;
therefore, we are unable to furnish a list of songs .... " (Interestingly, that response
seemingly contradicts the earlier oral reply about the status of the deposit copy. But
why? There was no indication on the application, or in the conversation and
correspondence, that the audiotape had been copied or stolen, but did it meet the same
fate as several contemporary Dylan deposits [see, for example, "Album Compilation '83 Pt.
3 (A Collection)" in the main text]?) As the application, certified by the signature of
Special Rider Music's "authorized agent" Naomi Saltzman on 30 December 1983,
unspecifically refers to an "Instrument of Transfer, filed with copyright office [sic],"
some of the contents may have been part of the 3 January 1980 transfer "Afternoon & 25
Other Titles" (see that entry in the main text). The Springs compositions in that
transaction which otherwise would not be registered are: "Afternoon" (w/Dylan), "Baby
Make Up Your Mind," "Fiji Town," "I Guess You Got Your Reasons," "It Started To Rain,"
"Japan," "Miss Tea And Syrnpa t h y '' (w/Dylan), "Roadway Rollin'," "Romance Blues" (w/Dylan),

With this document, signed by "Robert Waxman doing business as Dee Top Music," the
songwriter transferred and assigned to Four Aces Music, Inc., and "its successors and
assigns, fifty (50%) percent of all rights, title and interest," including the copyright,
to the musical composition written by Waxman. The transfer was made "subject to the terms
and conditions of the agreement dated May 19, 1983 ... " between the composer and Four
Aces. As the publisher shares Special Rider Music's mailing address, and Dylan's longtime
aide Naomi Saltzman is given as its president in a later transfer (see the second entry
below), by all appearances Four Aces must be a Dylan-owned company. Indeed, Waxman
confirmed this in a 17 March 2003 e-mail to Searching For A Gem's Web master Alan Fraser
when he wrote "I was published by Special Rider and I still get checks." The song was
written for The Ramones and was included on their album Subterranean Jungle (see the next

APPENDIX 3: DYLAN'S COMPANIES

Dylan has established, owned, and partnered in no less than 23 privately held companies starting
