GATHERING AROUND THE WORD
Call to Worship
One: Rejoice in the Lord, you people of God!
All: We will sing songs old and new to praise our God.
One: God loves righteousness and justice;
All: We will do our best to serve God faithfully.
One: The earth is full of God’s steadfast love.
All: We come to worship with glad hearts, to offer our love and loyalty.
Prayer of Adoration
You, O God, are overflowing with love, infinite in kindness, incomparable in glory. You
are the source of all good things. In you, all things work together for good. Your
presence breaks into our lives in many ways and you touch us with wonder. In this time
of worship, we offer you thanks with our prayers, praise with our hearts, and honor with
our lives, this day and every day, now and always AMEN.
*Hymn
God of Grace and God of Glory
God of grace and God of glory,
on thy people pour thy power;
crown thine ancient church's story;
bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of this hour,
for the facing of this hour.
2
Cure thy children's warring madness;
bend our pride to thy control;
shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss thy kingdom's goal,
lest we miss thy kingdom's goal.
Save us from weak resignation
to the evils we deplore.
Let the gift of thy salvation
be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
serving thee whom we adore,
serving thee whom we adore.
Prayer of Confession
God of all our journeys, you lead us day by day. Sometimes the going is smooth and
we follow gladly. But sometimes the going is difficult. We face obstacles and choices.
Sometimes we’re unsure which way to turn. Forgive us when we hesitate, and give us
the courage to take a step into your future. Amen
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
*Affirmation of Faith 1 Corinthians 13:4-13
I believe Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5 or
rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice
in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes
all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come
to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. 9
For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete
comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I
thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to
childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face.
Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And
now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD
Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Psalms 33
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous. Praise befits the upright. Praise the Lord with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings. Sing to him a new song; play skilfully on the
strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in
faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the
Lord. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his
mouth. He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle; he put the deeps in storehouses. Let
all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke,
and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord brings the counsel of the nations
to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands for ever, the
thoughts of his heart to all generations. Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people
whom he has chosen as his heritage.

Reading from the New Testament
Romans 4:7,13-16
‘Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the
one against whom the Lord will not reckon sin.’ For the promise that he would inherit the world
did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness
of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is
void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this
reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to
all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith
of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us).

Holy, Holy
Holy, holy, holy, holy,
Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty;
And we lift our hearts before You as a token of our love,
Holy, holy, holy, holy.
Gracious Father, gracious Father,
We're so blest to be Your children, gracious Father;
And we lift our heads before You as a token of our love,
Gracious Father, gracious Father.
Precious Jesus, precious Jesus,
We're so glad that You've redeemed us, precious Jesus;
And we lift our hands before You as a token of our love,
Precious Jesus, precious Jesus.
Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,
Come and fill our hearts anew, Holy Spirit;
And we lift our voice before You as a token of our love,
Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit.
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Hallelujah, hallelujah;
And we lift our hearts before You as a token of our love,
Hallelujah, hallelujah.
Reading from the Gospel
Matthew 29:9-13, 18-26
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he
said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house,
many tax-collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the
Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax-collectors
and sinners?’ But when he heard this, he said, ‘Those who are well have no need of a
physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, “I desire mercy, not
sacrifice.” For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’ While he was saying these
5
things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, ‘My
daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.’ And Jesus got
up and followed him, with his disciples. Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from
hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, for she
said to herself, ‘If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.’ Jesus turned, and seeing her he
said, ‘Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.’ And instantly the woman was made
well. When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute-players and the crowd making
a commotion, he said, ‘Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.’ And they laughed at
him. But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the
girl got up. And the report of this spread throughout that district.

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD
*Hymn
Open My Eyes, That I May See
Open my eyes,
that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me.
Place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my eyes; illumine me, Spirit divine!
Open my ears,
that I may hear voices of truth thou sendest clear.
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
everything false will disappear.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my ears; illumine me, Spirit divine!
Open my mouth,
and let me bear gladly the warm truth everywhere.
Open my heart,
and let me prepare love with thy children thus to share.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my heart; illumine me, Spirit divine!
