SPEAR Task

The skills Amria hoped to learn were the rules and regulations of basketball, as she did not have experience with the sport but wanted to better understand and enjoy watching games. Through discussion with reporters during the lesson, Amria learned several key rules of basketball, including rules for offense like dribbling and carrying the ball, and rules for defense such as avoiding fouling. She summarized the main rules for offense, defense, and the game in general that she now understands, such as only being allowed one dribble and not being able to enter the backcourt on offense.

1. What facts or skills did you hope to work on, hone, or learn by the end of the lesson
before we started basketball?
The skills that I wanted to work on or learn by the end of the lesson are the rules and
regulations of Basketball. As a non-sporty individual myself, I always thought that sports that
include balls such as basketball, volleyball, and others are scary. I get scared every time a ball
would come to my direction, thinking that I will be hit by the ball. Hence, I personally do not
participate in any sports unless it is required.
Since I have a close friend who plays basketball well, in fact, he is one of the varsity
players of DOrSU this year. When I got to watch his games a couple of times, it got me
curious and hooked at the same time. Knowing that Filipinos are big fans of basketball
leagues, may it be a baranggay “liga”, a school tournament, or a professional game, Filipinos
will eat it up as much as they would enjoy watching a Miss Universe pageant. As an
unlettered individual when it comes to basketball, I wanted to learn the rules and regulations
that partakes with it for the reason that I wanted to enjoy watching basketball games more. I
think that if I am knowledgeable enough with the rules and regulations of the said sport, I will
be able to understand more of what happens inside the court and the gameplay itself. Hence, I
will most likely enjoy watching the game and can finally relate to the hyped-up spirits of the
audience every time the game heats up and gets intense.
I know this wishful thinking is not anchored to having my body physically fit,
however, I will be lying if I say that I wanted to learn something about basketball because I
wanted to play, which is not the case for me as I honestly do not intend to engage and play the
sport itself as I have fear of getting hit by a ball and injuring myself in the process.

2. By looking at your answer to question number one, what have you learned so far?
By the end of the lesson, through the discussion of the reporters, I found out that the
basketball regulations might change slightly depending on the level of competition. However,
although there are certain rule variances, most basketball regulations can be used in almost
every game that is played. The following are the rules that I have learned based on the
discussion:
1. Rules for the Offense
a) The player must dribble, or bounce, the ball while using both feet and one hand. The
player may only move one foot if both hands ever touch the ball or if they cease
dribbling. The pivot foot is the one that is immovable.
b) Only one dribble attempt is allowed by the basketball player. Otherwise said, a
player cannot resume dribbling once they have stopped. A player is penalized for
double dribbling and loses the ball to the other team if they begin dribbling once
again. Once a player from either team touches or seizes control of the basketball,
that player cannot begin another dribble. After a shot or a pass, this typically occurs.
c) The ball must remain within the lines. The offensive team loses control of the
basketball if it goes out of bounds.
d) While dribbling, the player's hand must be directly over the ball. The player will
surrender the ball to the other team if they carry the ball after touching the bottom of
the basketball while dribbling.
e) The offensive team is not permitted to enter the backcourt after crossing half court.
It's referred to as a backcourt violation. The offensive team may legitimately recover
the ball if the defending team accidentally kicks it into the backcourt.
2. Defensive Rules
a) The group without a basketball plays defense. The fundamental guideline for
defensive players is to avoid fouling.
b) A foul is when physical contact is used to unfairly gain an advantage.
c) The referee will have to apply some interpretation, but generally speaking, the
defensive player cannot make contact with the attacking player in a way that results
in the offensive player losing the ball or failing to make a shot.
3. Rules in General
a) The foul rule applies to all players on the court, including attacking players, even
though it was previously described as a defensive rule.
b) Basketball players are not permitted to kick the ball or punch it.
