- I think global cities are considered as ‘global’ because these global cities are politically,
economically and socially successful. This means that a global city is economically independent or they
have established a strong economy like they can produce more jobs and education to the people, they
can produce more products locally and for international trades. In relation of with globalization, with the
help of advance technology in global cities, they are able to make the trades and communication faster
around the world. They also have a better educational and healthcare system. Global cities are global
because they are open and ready for potential international investors that may help their city to become
economically stable. Another is that a global city is considered as global because they are open for
political relations locally and internationally, like they have their own established politics and organization
locally as well as they can able to join and have a power in international political relations because of the
people that have the knowledge and education about running a city and country. Global cities are
considered as global for the reason of they have social appreciation to their cities. Example, in terms of
culture and heritage, global cities are conserving their culture and heritage by having separate funds for
its development. They also making their culture and heritage sites as tourist spots that attracts people
globally. Thus, this makes the other countries to be influenced by the global cities.
2. Enumerate and explain the various attributes of a global city
Economic power- this means that a global city must have its economic power by the means of
having international financial firms and institutions, participating and having stock exchange that
influences global economy, have a multinational corporations, as well as having a well-developed ports
and trading centers.
Research and Development- this means that a global city must have its research and
development by means of having high and good quality of education and technologies for conducting
research. With these, a global city could be able to generate new products, services and innovates their
system that may help to reach their economic prosperity.
Cultural Interaction- this means that global city must have an established and well-develop
cultural interaction because culture helps a city to be known globally through their own language, culture
or even what services or arts they are known. It can be the identity of a city, and with these it intensifies
their social relation and influenced the other cities.
Livability and Environment- The globaly city must have a safe-space, less crime rates, less
pollution, good sanitary and water system. Also, global city must provide and ensure that people must
have good salary and job tenure, affordable housing and basic needs accessible health-care system and
accessible education for all.
Accessibility- the global cities must be accessible for all people, locals or international. They must
ensure that they have a good and accessible transportation system. Airports must be near the major cities
and must be free from obstacles, and its system must be organized and satisfactory services because
this may influence the tourist to come back in a certain city that may have impact to economic growth.
3. In what manner/ways do global cities manifest global processes?
-Global cities can manifest global process by the means of utilizing its business activities,
information exchange, human capital, cultural experience and political engagement. Through these, the
manifestation of global processes will be achievable and faster because these ways are interconnected to
each other.
4. Would you consider global cities as engines of globalization? Support your answer with some
contemporary examples.
-Yes, global cities are engines of globalization for the reason that they are the one who can
manipulate the growth of this phenomenon. For example, multinational corporations like McDonalds have
their branches and franchise expanded around the world but they started in a city in America. Throughout
the branches in different global cities, they also have different McDonald menu according to the food
culture in their cities or country but the originality of McDonald as a fast food chain and its original menu
stays the same. Another one is the emergence of fashion industry during this contemporary time. Fashion
industry is very known in Paris, France because they are known as the fashion capital in the world.
Fashion is relevant in these days as the younger generations around the globe follow what are the trends
in fashion like the luxurious brands that are originated in Paris and now they have extended their brands
in other countries. These luxurious brands are also embracing the inclusivity and diverse cultures as they
are also getting their own global ambassadors across the globe like they are getting globally known Asian
Artist as well as Western Artists that may influenced other culture to embrace the culture and arts of
Parisian through their fashion.
5. Does the Philippines have a global city? Name the city and explain why.
Yes, an example of a global city here in the Philippines is the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.
This city manifests the attributes of a global city as has its economic growth because of the business
centers, establishments and financial centers that are established in that city. Also, it has a facility for
research and development center as they generate new ideas and innovation for their city as well as for
the country. They have also a safe-environment, recreational place and accessible to the airport and
transportation. The city is also accessible to the healthcare as they have hospital around the city.
