INTRODUCTION
Whats self-regulation? [=
Self-regulation means
understanding your emotions —
especially negative emotions—
‘and managing what you say or
ddo when you fel those emotions.
Selfregulation helps you think
before you act. Self-regulation is
something that people start to learn
froma very eatly age. For example,
a child might get upset at the
supermarket because she wants to
buy candy, but her mother says no
‘The child begins to cry and scream
loudly to express her feelings. The
mother stays calm and explains to
her daughter why she isnt buying
the candy. The child continues to
cry, but stops after afew minutes.

the child is an adult, she has learned
that she canit always have what she
wants when she wants it. And while
that type of situation can cause
frustration, its not common to see Adults can have problems with self

an adult get upset while driving in
heavy traffic? Some people are able
to remain calm, but some people
become angry and shout. Some
can even act violently. if you react
badly to negative emotions, there
are usually consequences. And the
‘consequences can be serious. It can
harm your relationships, you can
lose a job, or someone can get hurt.
‘The good news is that we all
have choices. When something
bad happens, or when you think
something bad is going to happen,
you can feel a negative emotion,
like anger, frustration, anxiety,
cor sadness, What happens after
that is your choice. Do you shout?
Do you become violent? Do you
go into your room, close your
door, and stop talking to people?
Self-regulation skills can help you
manage those feelings and avoid
saying and doing negative things
when you feel those emotions.
