READING COMPREHENSION
Once there was a small boy named Shankar. He belonged to a poor family. One day, he
was crossing through the forest carrying some woods. He saw an old man who was very
hungry. Shankar wanted to give him some food, but he did not have food for his own. So
he continued on his way. On his way he saw a deer who was very thirsty. He wanted to
give him some water, but he did not have water for himself. So he went on his way
ahead. Then he saw a man who wanted to make a camp but he did not have woods.
Shankar asked his problem and gave some woods to him. In return, he gave him some
food and water. Now he went back to the old man and gave him some food and gave
some water to the deer. The old man and the deer were very happy. Shankar then
happily went on his way.
However, one day Shankar fell down the hill. He was in pain but he couldn’t move and
no one was there to help him. But, the old man who he had helped before saw him; he
quickly came and pulled him up the hill. He had many wounds on his legs. The deer
that Shankar had gave water saw his wounds and quickly went to forest and brought
some herbs. After sometime his wounds were covered. All were very happy that they

The Role of Diplomats
The world has nearly 200 countries. How can we keep peace among many
groups? One way is through persons called diplomats. A country sends
diplomats to foreign countries to speak for it.
Ambassadors the chief diplomats are often known as ambassador. An
ambassador is chosen by the president or other government leader. He or she
lives in a foreign country and meets with its leaders. The place where the
ambassadors live and work is protected. The police or the army of the foreign
country may not enter these places.
Other diplomats beside the ambassador serve in foreign country. They must
pass a government test to become a diplomat. In college they study subjects
such as language and world history that will help them understand other
nations. They speak the language of the country where they are sent.
Diplomats report to their home government about the country in which they
serve. They help travelers from their home country. They issue papers that
allow people to come to their home country. In all these ways diplomats help
the countries of the world get along.

An earthquake
11
An earthquake comes like a thief in the night, without warning. It was
necessary, therefore to invent instruments that neither slumbered nor
slept. Some devices were quite simple. One, for instance, consisted of rods
of various lengths and thicknesses which would stand up on end like
ninepins. When a shock came it shook the rigid table upon which these
stood. If it were gentle, only the more unstable rods fell. If it were severe,
they all fell. Thus, the rods by falling and by the direction in which they
fell, recorded for the slumbering scientist, the strength of a shock that
was too weak to waken him and the direction from which it came. But,
instruments far more delicate than that were needed if any really serious
advance was to be made.
The ideal to be aimed at was to devise an instrument that could
record with a pen on paper the movements, of the ground or of the table,
as the quake passed by. While I write my pen moves but the paper keeps
still. With practice, no doubt, I could, in time, learn to write by holding
the pen still while the paper moved. That sounds a silly suggestion, but
that was precisely the idea adopted in some of the early instruments
(seismometers) for recording earthquake waves. But when table,
penholder and paper are all moving how is it possible to write legibly?
The key to a solution of that problem lay in an everyday observation.
Why does a person standing in a bus or train tend to fall when a sudden
start is made? It is because his feet move on, but his head stays still.

I. The Simple Past is formed in the following ways:
For regular verbs, add -ed to the root form of the verb (or just -d if the root form already
ends in an ‘e’:
Example: play - played; type - typed; listen - listened; push - pushed; love loved
II. For irregular verbs, there are various ways:
The Simple Past tense of some irregular verbs looks exactly like the root form: put - put;
cut - cut; set - set; cost - cost; hit – hit.
In other verbs, including the verb ‘to be’, the Simple Past forms follow shifts/changes of
differing nature: see - saw; build - built; go - went; do - did; rise - rose; am/is/are -
was/were.
Uses:
Use 1: Completed Action in the Past
Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific
time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but
they do have one specific time in mind.
Example:
Last year, my father produced rice.
We often use expressions with ago with the Past Simple:
I tilled the land a long time ago.
Use 2: A Series of Completed Actions
We use the Simple Past to list a series of completed actions in the past. These actions
happen, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on.
Example:
I finished work, walked to the plot, and found a nice tomato to taste.
Use 3: Duration in the Past
The Simple Past can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past.
Review 2: Use
The Past Continuous describes actions or events in a time before now, which began in the
15
past and were still going on when another event occurred.
Use 1: Interrupted Action in the Past
Use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted by a
shorter action in the Simple Past.
Examples:
Alemu was mowing the wheat crop the other day when a snake appeared.
While we were having the picnic, it started to rain.
A. What were you doing when you broke your leg?
B. I was storing the cereals.
Use 2: Specific Time as an Interruption
In Use 1 described above, the Past Continuous is interrupted by a shorter action in the
Simple Past. However, you can also use a specific time as an interruption.
Examples:
At midnight, we were still driving through the desert.
Yesterday at this time, I was sitting at my desk at work.
I started earlier; and at 6 PM, I was in the process of eating dinner.
Use 3: Parallel Actions
When you use the Past Continuous with two actions in the same sentence, it expresses the
idea that both actions were happening at the same time. The actions are parallel.
Examples:
I was studying while he was making dinner.
They were eating dinner, discussing their plans, and having a good time.
Use 4: Repetition and Irritation with “ Always”
The Past Continuous with words such as “always” or “constantly” expresses the idea that
something irritating or shocking often happened in the past.
Examples:
She was always coming to class late.
He was constantly talking. He annoyed everyone
Compound adjectives
A compound word in the English language is formed from two or more words.
Compound words can be closed (for example, ‘seafood’), open (for example, ‘water ice’)
or hyphenated (for example, ‘first-class’).
16
A compound adjective is an adjective that contains two or more words.
17
