1. Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to update information already supplied in the user manual regarding
clearances / tolerances for gearbox main bearing end float.

2. Scope
This bulletin applies to the top drives mentioned in table 1.

Please add this information to the user manual. No further action required.

Check of clearance (end float)

- Dismount wash pipe and clean the dressed area on


gooseneck and main shaft

- Measure the distance between gooseneck and main shaft by


means of a sufficient “clocking device”

Jack up the main shaft by means of a 10 ton jack (or similar)


and measure the distance again. The difference in the
measurements should not be more than table below:

NOTE ! Be aware of proper alignment

Adjustment of clearance (end float) - only applicable for the Top Drives with conical top bearing.
Models: DDM-650-EL-1M, DDM-500/650-HY.

o The following adjustment should be done after “visual inspection of top bearing”
o Establish contact between cone roller bearing and cover, without shim installed. Do not
apply torque to the screws.
o Turn the main shaft several times and tighten screws.
o Adapt the shim to required gap (0,1mm), i.e. clearance between bearing and cover.

Visual inspection of top bearing

- Remove top bearing cover

- Check for: -proper lubrication


-sign of mud
-corrosion
-wear and tear on rollers and bearing surface

- Check cone lubricate nipple

- Check that wear ring, shaft packing ring are in proper condition

Make sure that all parts are properly greased before assembly

Please include a copy of this Product Bulletin in the User Manual and in your operational
procedures.
Kindly distribute and inform all relevant personnel of this Product Bulletin.
