Tutorial 1

This document contains 6 questions related to surface water hydrology. Question 1 asks to determine losses from infiltration and evapotranspiration and runoff coefficient given catchment area, precipitation, and discharge data. Question 2 asks to calculate average runoff from given catchment area, precipitation, and infiltration loss. Question 3 asks to calculate change in storage level for a lake given its area, precipitation, outflow, evaporation loss, and seepage loss. Question 4 asks to develop a mass curve and rainfall hyetograph using rainfall data and determine maximum rainfall intensity period. Questions 5 and 6 involve additional rainfall data and calculations.

Surface Water Hydrology

Tutorial 1
1. A catchment with an area of 162 km2 received precipitation of 542 mm over one year
period. The average discharge recorded at the outlet of catchment area was 2.5 m3/s.
Determine the combined losses due to infiltration and evapotranspiration. Also
determine the runoff coefficient. Assume no changes in storage conditions. (Answer: 55.3
mm)

2. A 62.5 km2 catchment area received precipitation of 25.4 mm in one week. The infiltration
loss is estimated as 6.8 mm for the same week. Neglecting the evapotranspiration losses,
determine the average runoff reached to the outlet of catchment in m 3/s. (Answer: 1.92
m3/s)

3. A lake with an area of 1.75 km2 received precipitation of 100 cm over one week. The
average outflow from the lake was recorded as 2 m3/s. The evaporation loss and seepage
loss were estimated to be 22 cm and 10 cm respectively. Calculate the change in storage
level for this lake during this one-week period. (Answer: 15.08 cm rise)

4. The table 1 below lists rainfall data recorded at a gauge station for the 3-hr storm event. The basin
area is 15.6 km2. Using these data, develop a mass curve and a rainfall hyetograph with 15 min
time intervals. Determine the time period with maximum rainfall intensity. (Answer: time period
with maximum intensity=60-75 min)

Table 1.

Time (hr) Accumulated

rainfall (mm)
0 0
0.25 7.5
0.5 18.6
0.75 24.3
1 30.2
1.25 50.5
1.5 65.2
1.75 80.6
2 85.6
2.25 86.8
2.5 88.8
2.75 89.1
3 90.2
5. Using the rainfall hyetograph data given in table 2 below for 2-hr rainfall event, determine the
total amount of rainfall and plot mass curve. (85.6 mm)

Table 2.
Time (min) 0-15 15-30 30-45 45-60 60-75 75-90 90-105 105-120
Rainfall intensity 30 44.4 22.8 23.6 81.2 58.8 61.6 20
(mm/hr)

6. Determine average rainfall intensity for the storm event given in question 4. (Answer: 30.06
mm/hr)
