Djamila Bouhired was a famous Algerian militant and nationalist who joined the National Liberation Front in 1956 during the Algerian revolution. In 1957, she placed a bomb that killed civilians and was later arrested, tortured, and imprisoned for refusing to provide information about the FLN leader. Djamila Bouhired is a famous Algerian militant, freedom fighter and nationalist who was raised in a
modest family.
This intelligent, brave and intellectual woman attended a French school in Algiers where students repeated
every morning ‘’ France is our mother ’’, Bouhired would shout ‘’ Algeria is our mother‘’, thus she was
severely punished by the French headmaster.
When the Algerian revolution broke out in 1954 , Djamila joined the National Liberation Front ( FLN ) in 1956.
On April 1957,she was involved in the battle of Algiers. She placed a bomb on the roads used by the military
occupation. Three civilians were killed and many others were injured. Three months later, Djamila was arrested
and sent to prison. There she was brutally tortured in order to give information about the FLN’s Algerian leader
YACEF SAADI , but she refused to say any word. The French lawyer Jacques Verges whom she married in 1963
helped her and saved her from death. Bouhired remained in prison until 1962. After the independence, she was
released with many Algerian prisoners.
