L12 - Pressable Ceramics

Pressable ceramics are dental restorative materials that can be pressed or injected into a mold under heat and pressure. There are two main types: leucite-based (IPS Empress I) and lithium disilicate-based (IPS Empress II, IPS e.max). The fabrication process involves taking an impression, creating a wax or resin pattern, investing it, burning out the pattern, and pressing or injecting heated ceramic ingots into the mold. The restorations are then finished, stained, and layered or veneered. Leucite-based materials are indicated for inlays, onlays, and anterior crowns, while lithium disilicate can be used for more

A- Leucite based (IPS empress I):
• Contain more leucite crystal (38- 40%).
• Leucite crystals provide reinforcing phase.
• Strength 160- 180 Mpa.

Technique:

HT ingots • Small restoration (e.g. inlay and onlay)
(high translucency) • Chameleons effect more esthetic
LT ingots • Large restoration (e.g. anterior and
(low translucency) posterior crown)
MO ingots • Framework on vital and slightly discolored

HO ingots • Frame work on sever discolored tooth or
(high Opacity) titanium abutment
Impulse ingots
• Thin veneer, veneer and single crown

Gingiva ingots
• These two ingots facilitate the fabrication of the gingival portion
of the restoration, especially in large (implant-retained)
restorations, since the material does not shrink and the number of
ceramic firings can be reduced.
