Random Sampling
Discussion:
What is Random Sampling?
Random sampling, or probability sampling, is a sampling method that allows for the
randomization of sample selection, each sample has the same probability as other samples to be
selected to serve as a representation of an entire population.
Types of Random Sampling Methods
1. Simple Random Sampling
2. Systematic Sampling
3. Stratified Sampling
4. Cluster Sampling
Simple Random Sampling
Simple random sampling is the randomized selection of a small segment of individuals
or members from a whole population. It provides each individual or member of a population with
an equal and fair probability of being chosen. The simple random sampling method is one of the
most convenient and simple sample selection techniques.
When to use Simple Random Sampling?
Simple random sampling is used to make statistical inferences about a population. It helps
ensure high internal validity: randomization is the best method to reduce the impact of potential
confounding variables.
In addition, with a large enough sample size, a simple random sample has high external
validity: it represents the characteristics of the larger population.
However, simple random sampling can be challenging to implement in practice. To use
this method, there are some prerequisites.
You have a complete list of every member of the population.
You can contact or access each member of the population if they are selected.
You have the time and resources to collect data from the necessary sample size.
Simple random sampling works best if you have a lot of time and resources to conduct
your study, or if you are studying a limited population that can easily be sampled.
Example:
I am having a special dinner tomorrow night. I am trying to decide what to serve as the main
course: chicken, steak, or fish. I would like to make everyone happy so I will call 7 people to
find out their preference. Those invited are listed below.
Kevin Carl Sky Mae
Claire Andrei Joy Ian
Zach Gian Kurt Daisy
Kisha Jc Ashly Yanna
Lucy Ryan John Tim
Kim Beth Nick Julia
WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY THIS?
Firstly because in order for us researchers and specially for beginners to identify what kind of
sampling technique they are using or they will be using in the future when they are gathering the
respondents.
What do u mean by RESPONDENT?
A respondent is a person who replies to something such as a survey or set of
questions.
