For your Main Heading box, you may adjust the borderline that surrounds
your heading by clicking on it and dragging it left of right. Try it. Did it work?
Great! When you type your main heading (which is in the clickable text box),
make sure that your first letter is aligned to the cut in the bottom line of the
borderline. You may copy and paste the textbox and the borderline anywhere in
your Course Material whenever you need a main heading.
The line spacing that is used in the paragraphs is set to “multiple” 1.3. Make
sure that you indent your paragraphs. Spaces between paragraphs are set at 0.6.
Purposely, the paragraph’s right margin is set to give negative space for easy
reading. Notice the use of Times New Roman font, which is different from the
non-serif fonts used for main headings. You may change the font as you wish
(Garamond is an equally attractive serif font and happens to be my favorite).
Whatever font you use, do choose a serif one.

Your subheading here


Your subheading uses the same font (Myriad Pro) as your Main heading. The
main difference is that there is no borderline and is size 14 instead of 15, which
was used for your main heading. Sometimes, however, you would also need to
use paragraph headings under sub-headings. The use of paragraph headings
would help when students scan through the entire document checking for points
they need.
This is a paragraph heading. Paragraph headings, in case you need them, are in
Myriad Pro font size 12, similar to the font size of your text. You may adjust the
font size but when you do, use something smaller than your subheading.
Another paragraph heading. Notice that it uses a non-serif font. You should
also note that the paragraph heading is not indented. Another point to remember
is that it ends with a period.
If you need another paragraph to add under a paragraph heading, then you
would have to indent that – similar to what we did for this second paragraph. Do
you understand it so far? Good. If you get stuck somewhere, send me a message.

There are several more features you can put aside from the ones we discussed
during the webinar and the ones presented in the course material writing guide. I
know I’m probably blabbering, and that is because I need more text (rather than
resorting to lorem ipsum).
Your Paragraph heading (The critical thinking box). Check out the blue box
on the lower right corner. You can use it as a common feature in all your CMs.
One or two in every CM will do.

The side picture. The side picture is the sample that you see on this page.
You can easily change the picture and the captions. It will be best if you use a
portrait format pic. Notice that the pic does not bleed into the right margin.
You can do this by clicking on the picture. Once selected, go to the “picture
format” tab found on the top menu (where File, Insert, Home, etc are found).
The crop option is at the right most.
Please remember to put a caption on your
picture and make sure that you put photo credits.
Notice that the photo credit is in italics. This is to
separate it from the caption.
Ethical Choice Box. I’m just naming it the Ethical
choice box. Of course, you are free to rename it
whatever you want. If you decide that it should be a
feature in your CMs, use it twice in a CM so that the
students will be familiar with it. You can use it to
relate your lesson to any NU Core Value.
Notice that this paragraph’s right margin is more
indented than the previous ones. This is to give way
for your picture. Again, it is just a matter of sliding

What is filler? Filler consists of empty language that pads your sentences
without adding any additional meaning. Examples of fillers include words
and phrases such as “I mean,” “sort of,” “ya know?” “well,” and of
course, “like.” The most famous of all fillers that get the most attention
and is the bane of public speakers are “uh,” “um,” and “ah.” Speaking
experts suggest that we get rid of them.
Using uh and um too often takes away some of your credibility and makes you sound unsure. While it may
not be such a big deal when we are conversing with friends, too many ahs and ums during job interviews,
business presentations, formal speeches, and the like, make people perceive you negatively.
If you find yourself using these credibility killers often, you are not alone. Spontaneous conversation is
notoriously filled with these fillers. In fact, Marshall (2008) says that conversation fillers (speech disfluencies)
sometimes represent up to about 20% of “words” in everyday conversation.
