Hundred Years' War Overview

The Hundred Years' War between England and France from 1337 to 1453 consisted of several periods of war over territorial claims and succession of the French crown. It led to the strengthening of the French monarchy over its nobility as well as the birth of national identities in both countries through heroes like Henry V and Joan of Arc. strong claim to the French crown
via his mother Isabella.

In 1389 a truce was declared once


again and relations further improved

Henry V wanted not only to plunder the


territory of France, but also to seize it
forever and form an empire.

In England, many barons had
become rich as their power
increased at local level and the
king became weaker and poorer.

In France, the opposite was true as


the monarchy's position was
strengthened because of the success
of the war while that of the nobility
and the Estates General weakened.

Catholic Church ultimately saw
three popes all in office at the
same time.
New Weapons

Gunpowder weapons were first


used at the Battle of Crécy in 1346.
