Probability Calculations in Sampling

1. The probability that the total weight of 10 randomly selected goats exceeds 650 kg is 0.05705, given that goat weights are normally distributed with a mean of 60 kg and standard deviation of 10 kg. 2. The probability that a randomly selected person has type O blood is 0.3, given that the blood types of 200 people are distributed as 40 with type A, 75 with type B, 60 with type O, and 25 with type AB. 3. The probability of more than 3 accidents occurring in a given month at a facility where accidents follow a Poisson distribution with a mean of 2.7 per month is 0.2859.

SAMPLING AND SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION

Leigh Nathalie Leal

TOPER 121

1. The weight of goats at a farm is normally distributed with a mean of 60 kg and a standard deviation of
10 kg. A truck used to transport goats can only accommodate not more than 650 kg. If 10 goats are
selected at random from the population, what is the probability that the total weight exceeds the
maximum weight?

Step 1

Given,

Mean μ = 60

Standard deviation σ = 10

Sample size n = 10

Step 2

P (∑X > 650)

Mean μ= n*μ = 10 * 60 = 600

Standard deviation σ = σ * √n = 10 * √10 = 31.6227

P (∑X > 650) = P ((Σx-μ)/σ > (650-μ)/σ)

 P (∑X > 650) = P (Z >(650-600)/31.6228)

P (∑X > 650) = P (Z > 1.58)

P (∑X > 650) = 1 − P (Z < 1.58)

P (∑X > 650) = 1 − 0.94295

P (∑X > 650) = 0.05705

2. The blood groups of 200 people are distributed as follows: 40 have type A blood, 75 have type B
blood, 60 have type O blood, and 25 have type AB blood. If a person from any of the group is selected at
random, what is the probability that this person has an O blood type?
SAMPLING AND SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION

Given,

Total n(T)= 200

A blood n(A) = 40

B blood n(B) = 75

O blood n(O) = 60

AB blood n(AB) = 25

Step 2

Probability that this person has an O blood type = (m(O))/(m(T))= 600/200=0.3

Probability that this person has an AB blood type = (n(AB))/(n(T))= 25/200=0.125

3. The number of accidents in a production facility has a Poisson distribution with a mean of 2.7 per
month. For a given month, what is the probability that there will be more than three (3) accidents?

Given,

e, Euler's constant

λ = 2.7, mean number of occurrences

Step 2

Using Poisson Distribution:

P (X = x) = (λ^z e^(-λ))/x!

Probability that more than 3 accidents, means it cannot be 0, 1, 2 or 3 accidents, so it means 1 - less
than 3

P (X > 3) = 1 - P (X ≤ 3)

P(X>3) = 1 - P (X = 0) + P (X = 1) + P (X = 2) + P (X = 3)

= 1 - (〖2.7〗^0 〖 e〗^(-2.7))/0! + (〖2.7〗^(1 ) e^(-2.7))/1! + (〖2.7〗^2 e^(-2.7))/2! + (〖2.7〗^3 〖 e〗^(-2.7))/3!

= 1 - 0.7141

P(X>3) = 0.2859
