Health Care Ethics Case Study Analysis

The document contains 3 cases regarding health care ethics: 1. A nurse must follow the doctor's advice that an operation is not immoral, as nurses have a duty to assist regardless of personal beliefs or a patient's attributes. 2. A health care provider cannot claim ignorance of medical ethics, as they have a responsibility to understand medical issues and provide equitable care within moral rules. 3. While not all may agree on natural law principles, disagreement does not disprove their universality, as inherent human nature leads us to learn right from wrong.

HEALTH CARE ETHICS (NCM 108)

FIRST SEMESTER SY 2022-2023
Finals Activity 2 Case for Solution

A nurse says that her conscience clearly dictates that she should not assist at a particular operation.
One of the doctors present says that he went to a Catholic medical school and he would assure her that the
operation is not immoral. Should the nurse follow her conscience or the advice of the doctor?

 The nurse should follow the advice of the doctor, it is stated on the oath that “I will not permit
consideration of religion, nationality, race or social standing to intervene between my duty and my
patient”. Therefore, the nurse should be aware that one of her duty is to assist an operation
regardless of the situation. Moreover, if the nurse had pledge the “Hippocratic Oath”, she must
follow all the policy of the hospital to maintain and elevate the standard of her profession as nurse.

“Most moralists/ ethicists do not understand medical terminology and medical problems,” is the remark
of a health-care provider. “As long as I am not certain that anything I do is morally wrong, then I go ahead
and do it.” Is the health- care professional acting correctly?

 The health care professional is immorally wrong, as a health care provider he/she must be aware of
the different medical terminology and medical problems, how can you trust your health to a health
care provider who is not knowledgeable with medical problems? Moreover, a health care provider
must contribute to improving access to equitable healthcare by providing appropriate medical
services within the different levels of the healthcare system. Therefore, the action of breaking the
moral rules is considered an immoral act, regardless if you’re aware or not.

Statement: “All men do not agree on the so-called principles of natural law. This proves that they are
not universal principles.” What is your reaction about this statement?

 All men? I’m not convinced with statement. The natural law states that humans regardless of
gender, have a certain rights, moral values, and responsibilities that are inherent in human nature.
Natural law is not something that humans are taught; rather, we "learn" it by continually choosing
the good over the wrong. Therefore, a person whom does not agree on the so called principles
might be must be a result of inherent nature of Homo sapiens.
