PRIME NUMBERS
Students will be able to:
Recognize prime numbers and composite numbers
List all the prime factors of a given number
Find prime factors of numbers using the factor tree method
Find prime factors of numbers using the table method
OBJECTIVES
Identifying prime & composite numbers
Expressing a number as a product of its
prime factors
Critical thinking
SKILLS TO BE FOCUSED
ON:
Factors are the numbers that are multiplied together to find
other numbers.
For example, 6 × 5 = 30. In this example, 6 and 5 are
the factors of 30.
1, 2, 3, 10, 15 and 30 would also be factors of 30.
1 is factor of each number.
The number itself is also a factor of it.
Factors of any number can not be bigger than the number
itself.
FACTORS
Allnumbers having exactly two factors –
one and the number itself. Such numbers
are called prime numbers.
PRIME NUMBERS
All numbers having more than two factors
are called composite numbers
COMPOSITE NUMBERS
Ø The only even prime number is 2 .All other even numbers can
divided by 2 so they are composite numbers
Ø If the sum of a numbers digit is multiple of 3 , that number can be
divided by 3 so that will be a composite number.
Ø Any number greater than 5 that ends with 5 or 0 can be divided
by 5 so all these numbers will be composite numbers.
Ø 0 and 1 neither considered as prime numbers, nor as composite
numbers.
HOW TO IDENTIFY A PRIME NUMBER?
“Prime Factorization" is finding which prime
numbers multiply together to make the
original number.
PRIME FACTORIZATION
It is best to start working from the smallest prime
number, which is 2, so let's check: 12 ÷ 2 = 6, Yes, it
divided exactly by 2. We have taken the first step! But
6 is not a prime number, so we need to go further.
Let's try 2 again: 6 ÷ 2 = 3. Yes, that worked also. And
3 is a prime number, so we have the answer: 12 = 2 ×
2 × 3. As you can see, every factor is a prime number,
WHAT ARE THE PRIME FACTORS OF 12 ?
There are two methods:
Factor Tree method
Table Method
METHOD FOR PRIME FACTORIZATION
12 Prime Factors of 12 are :
12 = 2 × 2 × 3
2 6
2 3
FACTOR TREE METHOD
2 108
Prime factorization of
2 54
108 = 2x2x3x3x3
3 27
3 9
3 3

FOR MORE INFORMATION
Remember to:
identify
prime numbers as numbers which are divisible by one and
the number itself
identify
composite numbers as numbers that can be divided by
many numbers
identify the number one to be neither prime nor composite
use the factor tree method to calculate factors properly
use the table method to calculate factors properly
