Ways to Find a Job
Introduction:
It was not a long time ago when people will get a job right after attending
school. Even high school graduates can right away find a job that can already
support and built a family. And much more opportunities were given to those who
finished a course in college. But gone are those days.
Today, people have to be very quick about locating for a job opportunity and
struggle to find means to earn and support the family. And to note that, many
ended up with a job no longer in line to what they want and or to what they have
finished in college. And many college graduates even ended up with no work at all.
Surveys have shown us the statistics of unemployment here in our country. Now,
the question can be asked: Can we still find a job in line with what we took up in
college and move forward and upward (promotions)?
Here are some strategies that can be of help for you to answer the question
posed above. These strategies can keep your career moving and help you to find
opportunities in landing a job:
1. Networking
Many job opportunities are never advertised. The job vacancies are filled
by job seekers who learn of them by word of mouth from family
members, friends, former colleagues, etc.
Networking can also be called “socializing”. You need to join clubs and
associations, attend events or alumni homecoming and reunions. Connect
with other professionals who also work in the same field as yours. You
can be active member in your church organizations. Or you can also use
social media networks for such purposes. In other words, you have to be
an active member of the society or community you are in.
2. Referrals
The many people you meet and interact; the more chances you are going
to have in landing a job. There is a passage in the Bible that says; “Seek
and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened up to you, ask and you
shall receive” (Gospel of Matthew). It is not a burden or a sin to ask from
your friends, who are working in the same field as you are regarding
vacancies and openings. You have to build a relationship with people.
Because this relationship can someday be of help to you in finding a job
and may open up doors for you in the future.
3. Job Websites
Before the internet became popular, job seekers tend to inquire from the
newspapers (in classified ads corner) regarding job vacancies. But today,
a vast number of career related websites that post for job openings and
vacancies.
4. Job Fairs
Nowadays, a lot of companies offer a job fairs. This is to ease the job
seekers’ efforts in finding a job. And in such a way, the company will
also benefit from finding an employee easily.
Many business organizations offer an on-site interview. Hence, if you
attend a job fairs, bring along with you all the documents you need for
applying for a job, such as, resume, certificates, and all.
5. Cold Calling
If you could not find a job listings posted, you might be consider making
a cold call. A cold call is when you make a phone call or emailing
companies that you are interested to apply. Ask about upcoming
vacancies or openings.
Please be aware that this kind of contact is not always well-received.
Thus, you have to be very courteous in making calls and as much as
possible, use the right words in making calls or email. However, if you
are lucky enough, you might be making calls at the right time that there is
a vacancy in the company you are calling. And if not, then you will have
a chance to know on the upcoming vacancies.
6. Headhunters and Recruiters
Applying through agency or recruiters can be a good choice, particularly
if you find the whole idea of selling yourself particularly tough –
recruiters are paid to do that bit for you!
Recruitment agencies regularly and actively search for work on your
behalf, so this, of course, can lighten the burden a bit if you're finding
trawling for jobs particularly tiresome, and it can bag you a job quicker
than expected.
However, while there are big positives, do be aware that temp work
sourced by recruitment agencies can often involve a whole lot of licking
envelopes for minimum wage, and nothing more inspiring.
7. Internships
Internship means a position given to a student or trainee to work in an
organization or company. However, most of the time it is without pay.
However, it is to let the individual gain work experience or satisfy
requirements for a qualification. But, in many cases, the company will
give the students/trainees the opportunity to work as a full time worker, if
they show good qualities during their stint as intern.
Hence, whether you are looking for your first job after graduating from college
or high school or you're looking to change companies or progress in your career, it is
vital to know how to look for a job. Although finding a new job might seem challenging,
there are many different methods to find one effectively and efficiently.
The above are just a few strategies for you to consider when you decide to find a
job.
