MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
Introduction To Workshop Processes And Materials (W.P.M)
Workshop processes and materials is the type of technology which deals with different or equipment
are made.
Course Objectives:
The subject aims at imparting knowledge and skills components in the field of basic workshop
technology. It deals with different hand tools and machine tools required for manufacturing
simple metal component and articles.
Objectives:
After the completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. Practice workshop safety rules effectively,
2. Acquire knowledge and use simple hands tools,
3. Acquire knowledge and use simple measuring and gauging instruments.
4. Operate various tools for producing simple metal components and articles
5. Operate simple drilling machine for producing small holes.
6. Acquire knowledge and practice on foundry, forging and welding.
General Safety Precaution For Workshop
The following are general safety precautions in the workshop:
1. Wear your safety glasses.
For sight is better than no sight.
2. Always wear appropriates personal protective clothing.
3. Keep tools clean and sharp
4. Provide enough light so you can see what you are doing.
5. Wherever possible use clamps or vice to hold your work.
6. Maintain secure footing and balance at all time.
7. Protect yourself from electric shock.
8. Keep all guards and shield in place.
9. Use the right tools for the right job.
10. Avoid unnecessary distraction.
Bench Work and Fitting
Introduction:
The bench work and fitting play an important role in every engineering workshop to complete and finish
the job to the desired accuracy. Though today in industries most of the work is done on automatic
machines and finished to a fairly good degree of accuracy, still the require some operations to be done
by hand to finish them to the desired accuracy.
The work carried out by hand at the bench is called bench work, whereas fitting is the assembling of
parts together by filling, chipping, sawing, scraping, tapping etc, necessary after the machine operation.
Fitting Tools
1. Holding tools
2. Striking tools
3. Drilling tools
4. Cutting tools
5. Scraping tools
6. Measuring, making and testing tools.
We shall now discuss these tools in details
Holding Tools (Vices)
The holding tools or vices required to hold the work firmly. The following are the various types of vices
for different purposes.
1. Bench vices:
