Least Common Multiples Study Guide

This document provides instructions and examples for finding the least common multiple (LCM) of sets of numbers. It explains that the LCM is the smallest number that is a multiple of all numbers in the set. Examples are provided to demonstrate finding the multiples of individual numbers and identifying the first common multiple as the LCM. A pre-test and post-test with practice problems are included to help students learn and test their understanding of finding LCMs.

LEAST COMMON MULTIPLES

LS3

Objective: Find the least common multiple of a set of numbers

Study and Learn

The skill of finding the least common multiple is needed when you add or
subtract dissimilar fractions. Thus, it is important to learn this skill.
Look at the set of numbers below and their multiples.

3 – 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30

6 – 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60

9 – 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 are multiples of 3. What are the multiples of
6? 9?

Look at the multiples of the three numbers. Which multiples are common? 18
If we continue to list down the multiples of these, will it be possible that they’ll
have common multiples?

Since 18 is the first common multiple, we call 18 the least common multiple.

Try another set of numbers:

4 - 8, 12, 16, 20, 24

5 - 10, 15, 20, 25, 30
10 - 20, 30, 40, 50, 60

What is the least common multiple of 4, 5 and 10? 20

Wrap Up
The least common multiple (LCM) of two or more numbers is the smallest non-zero
number that is common multiple to all of them.
