INTRODUCTION
There are large numbers of commercial Online Shopping websites offering large number
of products tailored to meet the shopping interests of large number of customers. These
online marketplaces have thousands of products listed under various categories.

Online shopping is a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to directly buy
goods or services from a seller over the Internet using a web browser or a mobile app.
Consumers find a product of interest by visiting the website of the retailer directly or by
searching among alternative vendors using a shopping search engine, which displays the
same product's availability and pricing at different e-retailers. As of 2020, customers can
shop online using a range of different computers and devices, including desktop computers,
laptops, tablet computers and smartphones.

An online shop evokes the physical analogy of buying products or services at a regular
"bricks-and-mortar" retailer or shopping center; the process is called business-to-consumer
(B2C) online shopping. When an online store is set up to enable businesses to buy from
another businesses, the process is called business-to-business (B2B) online shopping. A
typical online store enables the customer to browse the firm's range of products and
services, view photos or images of the products, along with information about the product
specifications, features and prices.

Online stores usually enable shoppers to use "search" features to find specific models, brands,
or items. Online customers must have access to the Internet and a valid method of payment to
complete a transaction, such as a credit card, an Interact-enabled debit card, or a service such
as PayPal. For physical products (e.g., paperback books or clothes), the e-tailer ships the
products to the customer; for digital products, such as digital audio files of songs or software,
the e-tailer usually sends the file to the customer over the Internet. The largest of these online
retailing corporations are Alibaba, Amazon.com, and eBay

PURPOSE:
Because of the numerous advantages and benefits, more and more people say they prefer
online shopping over conventional shopping these days. The buyer’s decision-making
process has changed dramatically in recent years. Buyers are conducting extensive research
online before ever speaking to a salesperson. Buyers are also making more direct purchases
online and via their smartphone, never stepping foot into traditional brick-and-mortar
locations. The internet makes doing business much easier and faster. It’s led to changes in
the way people do business with a rapidly growing worldwide trend towards online shopping
or e-commerce.

Many people around the world prefer to shop online and buy products from several brands and
companies that they cannot find or are not available for purchase in their home countries.
Nowadays, and with the help of the new technology and the support of the internet, people
from all around the world started to purchase items online by simply sitting in their homes.
Purchasing items and products through the Web is a very easy task to do. It is now playing a
very important role in everybody’s life especially elderly people, as well as people with a
very busy life schedule. It provides a very comfortable service for its customers, by being
able to save the item in the personal shopping bag and buy it later. Shopping through the Web
simply works for people with a valid credit card, a debit card, or an internet bank account.

Selling direct online increases your reach. With an online store, your profits are no longer
limited by the number of customers that can physically visit your brick-and-mortar location.
You can sell across towns, states, and even across borders, removing all geographical
limitations. Your online store also allows you to cater to shoppers who find it more
convenient to browse and buy at times when retail locations are not traditionally open. Online
shopping can save time for both the buyer and retailer, reducing phone calls about
availability, specifications, hours of operation or other information easily found on company
and product pages.

EXISTING PROBLEMS:
• The basic problems with the existing systems are the non-interactive environment
they provide to the users.

• The use of traditional user interfaces which make continuous post backs to the server;
each post back makes a call to the server, gets the response, and then refreshes the entire web
form to display the result. This scenario adds an extra trade off causing a delay in displaying
the results

• A search engine that would display the results without allowing the users to
further filter the results based on various parameters.

• Use of traditional and non-user-friendly interfaces that are hard to use

SOLUTIONS:

• The motive of this Online Shopping Web Application is to allow the user to play with
the search tool and create different combinatorial search criterion to perform exhaustive
search.

• Making the application AJAX enabled gets rid of these unnecessary delays letting the
user to perform exhaustive search. The users of this application can easily feel the difference
between the Ajax empowered user interfaces vs. traditional user interfaces.

• Provide Interactive interface through which a user can interact with different areas of
application easily.

• A search engine that provides an easy and convenient way to search for products
specific to their needs. The search engine would list a set of products based on the search
term and the user can further filter the list based on various parameters.

• Provide Drag and Drop feature thereby allowing the user to add products to or
remove products from the shopping cart by dragging the products in to or out of the shopping
cart.

USER CLASSIFICATION:
Users can be classified into two types based on their knowledge of the products that suit their
needs. They can be classified as users who know about the product that would satisfy their
needs and users who must figure out the product that would satisfy their needs. Users who
know about the product should be able to find the product easily with the click of a button.
Such users can search for the product by using the product name as the search term. Users
who must figure out the product that would satisfy their needs could use a search term to find
a list of products and then should be able to filter the results based on various parameters like
product type, manufacturer, price range, platform supported etc.

Disadvantages of online shopping
Ease of use is the prime reason that drives the success of e-commerce. Though
the internet provides a quick and easy way to purchase a product, some people
prefer to use this technology only in a limited way. Some people also fear that
they might get addicted to online shopping. The major disadvantages of online
shopping are as follows.

1. Delay in delivery

Long duration and lack of proper inventory management result in delays in

shipment. Though the duration of selecting, buying and paying for an online
product may not take more than 15 minutes; the delivery of the product to
customer’ s doorstep takes about 1-3 weeks.

2. Lack of significant discounts in online shops

Physical stores claim to give significant discounts when compared to online

stores, this is a huge disadvantage for the older generation.

3. Missing the shopping experience

The traditional shopping exercise provides a lot of fun in the form of showroom
atmosphere e, smart sales attendants, scent and sounds that cannot be
experienced through a website. Indians generally enjoy shopping. Consumers
look forward to it as an opportunity to go out and shop.

4. Frauds in online shopping

Sometimes, there is a disappearance of the shopping site itself. In addition to the

above, the online payments are not much secured. The rate of cybercrimes has
been increasing and customers’ credit card details and bank details have been
misused which raise privacy issues

Conclusion
Technology has made significant progress over the years to provide
consumers a better online shopping experience and will continue to do so
for years to come.
With the rapid growth of products and brands, people have speculated that
online shopping will overtake in-store shopping. While this has been the
case in some areas, there is still demand for brick-and-mortar stores in
market areas where the consumer feels more comfortable seeing and
touching the product being bought.
However, the availability of online shopping has produced a more
educated consumer that can shop around with relative ease without having
to spend a large amount of time. In exchange, online shopping has opened
up doors to many small retailers that would never be in business if they
had to incur the high cost of owning a brick-and-mortar store.

At the end, it has been a win-win situation for both consumer and sellers.
