CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Rationale of the Study
Time management is the set of skills, tools, and techniques that a person
employs to complete a specific task. When setting a goal, one of the things you'll
need is time management. This motivates the individual to achieve the goal they
set. The time-bound aspect of a goal allows for progress tracking, whereas without
it, it will be meaningless. All goals that are set should be timely, meaning that there
is a set deadline attached to the goal (Leigh Anthony, n.d). This motivates
individuals to complete the task within a specific time frame. It also offers the
knowledge required to develop a strategy in order to meet the goal within the
timeframe specified. Individuals can focus the majority of their time each day by
setting goals. Individuals are more capable of organizing their workloads based on
the their goals, and they manage their time more effectively at works.
Time is mostly addressed in ethical reflections on lifetime or in teaching
time management skills (Grauer et al, 2022). A study from Germany introduces the
concept of time as a resource for sustainability before presenting an analysis of
how time in this sense is addressed in 2,149 German curricula, covering all grades
and school forms. It was then discovered that an engagement with time as a
resource for sustainability is rare in formal education.
In a recent study of (Demirdag, 2021), it was shown the relationship between
university students' communication skills, free time management, and motivation
levels are determined that there are positive and meaningful relationships between
students' motivation and the subscales of communication skills and free time
management. These subscales include goal setting and technique, free time
attitude, scheduling, evaluating, respect, ability of expression, desire, democratic
attitude, value, and obstacles. In addition, a regression analysis shows that students'
motivation is predicted by their free time management and communication skills.
The researchers strongly believe that in every aspect of the daily routine and
goal of every students of Saint Cecilia's College - Cebu Incorporated asserts time
management. As a result, the purpose of the paper is to study and evaluate the
relevance of time management in goal setting of students in Saint Cecilia's College
- Cebu Incorporated.
Conceptual Framework and Theoretical Framework
Figure 1.0 Conceptual Framework of the study
The first frame illustrates the significance of time management in goal
setting. It contributes greater clarity, provide a better quality of work, and lessens
the stress and anxiety of students. In the society where the students belong, there
are factors that ruins their management of time and it would be the basis of the
researchers on how students perceive the essence of time management.
The second frame illustrates the effects of setting goals and consider
student’s competency in achieving goals.
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the relevance of time management in
goal setting on HUMSS students' academic performance at St. Cecilia's College,
Cebu, Inc.
Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the respondents’ demographic profile in terms of:
1.1 Age
1.2 Grade Level
1.3 Level of Competency
1.4 Extracurricular Activities
2. How do they perceive time management?
3. How effective is time management in achieving a goal?
4. Is there a significant relationship between time management and goal setting?
5.What are the drawbacks of time management?
NULL HYPOTHESIS
HO1: There is a significant relationship between time management and goal
setting.
SIGNIFANCE OF THE STUDY
The research study will assist readers in understanding the relevance of time
management in goal setting. Future studies may serve as a foundation for future
studies that they will conduct.
This study will be a benefit to the following:
Students. In a student's hectic schedule, time management can be extremely
beneficial. It ensures that students are well prepared, organized, and focused in
order to manage their daily lives and finish academic assignments on time. It can
lead to increased success, but it is a skill that students must learn and practice.
Teachers. Time management is a crucial skill to have. This can be used in the
classroom by teachers to maximize learning opportunities for students. Time
management is essential because it allows you to prioritize your tasks. After you've
made a list of your daily tasks, you'll need to decide what to do first.
Parents. Give children roles and responsibilities as they reach adulthood. It
appears to work better than the reactive habit of asking or telling them to do
something.
Community. Maintain a healthy balance of volunteer time, personal time, work
time, and time for other people and interests. Complete priority responsibilities.
Take advantage of idle time without feeling guilty.
Future Researchers. The findings of this study will serve as a foundation and
resource for potential researchers seeking additional data and concepts.
Definition of Terms
For a better and clear understanding about this study, the following terms
are defined:
Deadline - pertains on the allocated time frame given to accomplish a specific
responsibility. The study uses the term as the factor that deliberates the priority that
has to be fulfilled.
Goal Setting - refers to how the students organize and accomplish a goal. In this
study, the term is used as the context of the highlight of the study.
Motivation - refers to the dedication of the respondents in achieving and
accomplishing a goal.
Time - depicts on the duration of the working process of the respondents in
reaching a goal.
Time Management - essentially means on how the time is organized accordingly
with the corresponding work or responsibilities. In this study, it is the main focus
on how relevant it is in reaching a goal.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Goal setting is an important component in successful teaching and learning,
but relatively little is known about its impact on course persistence and
achievement in massive open online courses. We compared the effects of two
groups of learners who received different writing prompts at the start of their
course using an experimental design and a range of data, including student
compositions, content-related assignment attempts, and quantitative
accomplishment in the courses. Although there were no overall effects of writing
prompt type on the dependent variables, when goal compositions were investigated
and compared more closely using qualitative coding, there were highly statistically
significant differences. Participants who included either learning or performance
goals in their written responses to prompts performed better and were engaged in
learning longer than participants whose written responses did not fall into either of
these categories Li Kun et al (2021).
When controlling for the typical effect of prior academic performance,
research at the University of New South Wales with Defense Force Academy
students found time management skills considerably increase the academic results
of male students but not female students. While a great deal of prior research has
shown a favorable relationship between time management and academic
performance in civilian contexts, there is a dearth of study on this relationship in
dual-military or work and academic settings. By examining the effectiveness of a
direct training intervention in time-management skills, our research builds on
numerous national and international studies. Roberts et. al (2021).
