Smoke Detection System for Schools

This document outlines a research agenda to develop and test a prototype smoke detection and notification system using RFID technology for school restrooms. The research will have two phases: developing the prototype and usability testing in a simulated school restroom. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze data collected during testing, such as the average time between smoke detection and notification. The goals are to help regulate smoking in schools, limit smoking activities, reduce secondhand smoke exposure, and provide a foundation for future related research.

RESEARCH AGENDA – Academic Track (STEM)

TOPIC Development and Usability Testing of

Prototype Smoke Capturing And Notification
(SCAN) System with RFID for School
Restrooms

TYPE OF RESEARCH Quantitative Research

METHODOLOGY This research used research and development
design. This study is composed of two phases:
the development of a prototype for detecting
cigarette smoke in school restrooms and the
usability testing of the prototype within a
simulated place similar to the dimensions of
an average school comfort room. Data
gathered in the research were interpreted
quantitatively and supported by statistical
computations.
In this study, the researchers used Descriptive
statistics. It only tries to find mean for getting
the average time interval between the start of
smoking activity and the notification.

IMPORTANCE For schools who have dense teenage

population that needs for a tighter regulation
through technological approach in monitoring
and controlling smoking activities.
For smokers, as it limits their smoking
activities. Potentially helping them in
adjusting and soon, stopping such destructive
habits.
For non-smokers, it will be of value since
reducing the main smoking activities diminish
the potential threat of secondhand smoke for
bystanders. Hence, providing a safer restroom
for all users.
For future researchers, The materials used and
developed in this study maybe be adopted and
used as a foundation in further expanding the
body of knowledge needed in doing a
technological approach in regulating smoking
acts or any other heinous activities in their
future research.
