Good Afternoon/Morning Panelist! I’m Luisa Mariz I.
Pascual under the advisory
of Mrs. Rutchel A. Ortiz.
Today we’ll be discussing the study that we did in regards to The Perception
of Grade 12 Senior High School Students of Holy Family Academy of Quezon,
Nueva Ecija Inc. on the Impact of Social Media to their Academic Performance.
According to Ashraf et el (2021), social media platforms are the best resource
for improving communication, promoting positive learning attitudes,
encouraging students to seriously consider learning and learning activities,
and maximizing social capital through virtual communications. However, Ortia
(2009), stated that research establishes that using Facebook has strong
negative impact on academic performance of students with extrovert
personalities. However, factor of self-regulation among students greatly
reduces this negative impact as they have high level of effective self-control
while using social media platforms.
Our researchers are Emmanuel Andrada, Juliana Ellaine Chavez, John Lloyd
Dicion, Christian Jher Esguerra, Faith Aevarine Queye P. Giron, Leslie Joy
Pangilinan, Luisa Mariz Pascual, and Sheila Joy Velasco.
To express our views in a clearer manner, we created this visual presentation.
That will help you understand what our study is all about.
INTRODUCTION (Faith)
Social media provides students with multiple ways to connect virtually with
others. As a Grade 12 student who experienced the E-Learning before, we
observed that there might be an impact of using social media to the academic
performance of the students.
This research will provide you the information and answers to your questions.
After this research has been done, we reached the answers and that is the
impact of social media to the students’ academic performance is dependent on
how the students use and manage it.
CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Social Media Usage
In recent times, students’ social lives heavily rely on social media. The
researchers aim to determine the impacts of social media to the students. The
purpose of this study is to gather the perception of Grade 12 students
regarding the stated problem.
Impact of Social Media to the Academic Performance of the
Student.
The result of this study is that social media has both negative and positive
impacts on students overall performance in school. The severity of the impact
depends on how the student handles their social media use.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. What are the impacts of social media on students' academic
performance?
2. How does student's participation in social media sites influence
the academic performance of the students?
3. What are the social media platforms that are susceptible to the
academic performance of grade 12 students of Holy Family Academy of
Quezon, Nueva Ecija, Inc.
4. What percentage of grade 12 students believe that social media has
an impact on there academic performance.
This research aims to distinguish the impacts of social media on the academic
performance of grade 12 senior high school students of holy family Academy
of Quezon, Nueva Ecija Inc.
HYPOTHESIS
Ho: Social Media has no impact on the academic performance of
grade 12 students.
Ha: Social Media has no impact on the acacemic performance of
grade 12 students.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Perception of Students
It is one of the essential psychological aspects because through perception,
people know about the kinds of phenomena that exist in the environment.
All of the learning process always begin with perception. According to Cole
(1994), perceptions affects students’ willingness to participate actively in
question-and-answer sessions.
Social Media
According to Dearborn (2014), social media is a “communication channel which
is very popular, extremely fast and broad, has proven to be highly effective.”
Dalhmstorm et al (2011), stated that a significant portion of social media
users are youths, most of whom are senior high school students.
Academic Performance
This refers to achievement in standardized tests or examinations shown by a
student.
SCOPE AND DELIMINATION
Aims to determine the impact of social media on the academic
performance of Grade 12 students of Holy Family Academy of Quezon.
The general intent of this study is to determine whether social media has an
impact or has no impact on the academic performance of Grade 12 students od
Holy Family Academy of Quezon, Nueva Ecija Inc.
124 of population size
The study is limited to 90% of the population of the grade 12 department. The
total population consists of 140 grade 12 students.
Holy Family Academy of Quezon, Nueva Ecija Inc.
The overall data was collected within 2 days, and it was conducted during the
first semester of the academic year 2022-2023 in Holy Family Academy of
Quezon, Nueva Ecija Inc.
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The respondents of the study were only based on the availability
of the Grade 12 students.
Since there were many workloads at the time of the survey, the researchers on
based on their availability.
Time constraints.
The time of the researchers were always divided due to other requirements
needed in school
The type of questionnaires used in the survey failed to provide
precise responses.
Despite this limitation, the researchers still made it work through the use of
various data analysis method.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Teachers and Parents
This research will assist school teachers in understanding social media’s
effects on school learners, allowing them to illuminate and raise student
awareness about its possible implication on them.
Students and Future Researchers
This will engage senior high school students in order to make them aware that
aside from the school benefits of these social networking sites, utilizing
them more than necessary may pose health risks.
Administration of the school
This research can be an effective tool that school administrators can use to
solve educational problems that do not have easy answers.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Academic Performance
As stated by stated by BMC (2022), academic performance/achievement is
determined by continuous assessment or cumulative grade point average and
indicates how well a student, instructor, or institution has met their short-
or long-term educational goals.
Perceptions
In accordance with Cambridge Dictionary (2022), it is a belief or opinion,
often held by many people and based on how things seem.
Senior High School
A two-year program of specialized upper secondary education; depending on
their abilities, interests, and educational options, students can select
specialty.
Social Media
According to Tufts (2022), social media refers to methods of communication
where individuals produce, share, and/or exchange knowledge and concepts in
online groups and networks.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES
-FOREIGN LITERATURES AND STUDIES
(Positive Effects of Social Media on Students’ Academic Performance)
Rifkin et al. (2009)
Students' academic life has moved to a different dimension since the
introduction of these social media networks and several studies have affirmed
that social media plays an important role on students in higher education
including the study conducted by Rifkin et al. (2009)
(Negative Effects of Social Media on Students’ Academic Performance)
Jacobnes & Forste (2011)
The Nilsen Media Research study conducted in June 2010 found that almost 258
of students' time was spent on the internet and social networking sites.
Gorhe (2019)
Gorhe (2019), stated that when a student gets too involved with the use of
social media, it affects his overall academic performance. Many students use
social solely for social networking. chatting and just whiling away their
time. This wastes their study time and thus they are not able to complete
their homework, assignments or projects on time. Also, while studying,
students keep checking their social media accounts for near updates and
notifications. This distracts them and results in loss of concentration in
studies which can affect their academic performance negatively
Tus et al. (2021)
Tus et al. (2021) concluded that social media usage has a positive effect on
students' academic performance. This proves that social media has a
significant impact on the environment, especially students. It show that the
students use academic work, get information about current events, read the
recent news, and many more. Furthermore, students it enjoyment and pleasure,
such as watching movies, communicating with their friends and relatives, and
looking at funny media. It is also a way to unwind themselves from academic
stress.
Wilson (2013)
According to Wilson (2013), "although social networking sites do really have
positive impacts to an individual’s life or even to the whole community, too
much use of these would begin to interfere with the lives wherein he stated
the psychologists refer to this as social networking compulsion or
addiction.
Jacinto et al. (2021)
According to Jacinto et al. (2021), the use of social media platforms has no
significant effect on the academic performance of the students. However, the
use of social media platforms has both good and bad results on the students
aside from school purposes- Some find it helpful in terms of communication,
and same thing of it as a cause of pear quality sleep of students. Social
media could either be beneficial or harmful to students' academic performance
depending on how the students use and manage it.
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
I. RESEARCH DESIGN
Descriptive research design
The researchers used Descriptive Research Design. A Descriptive Research is a
research method that is used to try and determine the characteristics of a
population or a particular phenomenon. It is often favored for survey research
because it generates answers in a statistical form, which makes it easy for
researchers to carry out a simple statistical analysis to interpret what the
data is conveying.
II. RESEARCH LOCALE
This study was conducted inside the Holy Family Academy of Quezon,
Nueva Ecija, Inc
This study was conducted at Holy Family Academy of Quezon, Nueva Ecija, Inc.
It is located in Tomas Joson Ave., Brgy II, Quezon, Nueva Ecija. It is one of
the non-sectarian private and the only catholic school in municipality of
Quezon that offers various educational program from preschool to senior high
school that provides various academic strands, such as, Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) , Accountancy, Business, and Management
(ABM) and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS). Holy Family Academy and its
school program are duly acknowledged by the Department of Education (DepEd) .
HFA is also member of Apo Jose Catholic Education System Foundation, Inc.
(ACES) and Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP).

(STEM), 12 Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) and 53 from
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)
[Link] Gathering Tools
Language
English is the language that was used by the researchers in this
Quantitative Research that makes use of tools such as survey
questionnaires to make a better comprehension and clear data
collection from the students.
Survey and Questionares
According to Creswell (2012), surveys are procedures in
quantitative research in which investigators administer a survey
to a sample or to the entire population of people to describe the
attitudes, opinions, behaviors, or characteristics of the
population. Creswell continues, “Surveys help identify important
beliefs and attitudes of individuals.”
Likert Scale
Researchers utilized a Likert scale, which is a unidimensional
measure, to gather respondents' attitudes and opinions. The Likert
scale makes the assumption that the experience's strength and
intensity are linear. So, if attitudes can be measured, it goes
from total agreement to total disagreement.
Questionnaire-Reliability Test
According to L.M Collins (2007), Cronbach's alpha is a way of
assessing reliability by comparing the amount of shared variance,
or covariance, among the items making up an instrument to the
amount of overall variance. The idea is that if the instrument is
reliable, there should be a great deal of covariance among the
items relative to the variance.
[Link] Gathering Procedures
The Grade 12 students of Holy Family Academy of Quezon, Nueva
Ecija, Inc. were chosen by the researchers to participate in the
study. The final questionnaire was composed of 35-item Likert type
questionnaires. The survey questionnaire is divided into three
sections: "The Impacts of Social Media on Student Academic
Performance", "The Influence of Participation in Social Media
Sites on Students' Academic Performance", and "The Social Media
Platforms that are Susceptible to Students' Academic Performance".
[Link] Treatment of Data
Descriptive Statistics of Frequency and Percentage Distribution
The frequency and percentage distribution was used to determine
the frequency counts and percentage distribution of personal
related variables of the respondents.
Formula: % = (f/n)* 100
Where: f = frequency (the number of times the answer appears)
n = total number of respondents % = percentage of answers from the
respondents
Descriptive Statistics of Average Weighted Mean
The weighted average or weighted mean was used to consider some data values
that are more important than other values, and therefore, contribute more to the
final "average".
Formula: 𝑥 = ∑(𝑤∙𝑥) ∑ 𝑤
Where: Σ = summation operator (it means “take the sum of”)
W = weights (Likert Scale) X = value (frequency)
Σ = summation of overall population
Inferential Statistics of Chi-Square(X²) Test
The chi-square(X²) test was utilized in this study to test the hypothesis. A
Pearson’s chi-square test is a statistical test for data. It is used to determine
whether the data expected are significantly different from expectations of the
researchers (Turney, 2022).
Formula: 𝑋 2 = ∑ (𝑂−𝐸) 2 𝐸
Where: Χ2 = chi-square test statistic
Σ = summation operator (it means “take the sum of”)
O = observed frequency E = expected frequency
