JAPAN

- in Japanese is NIHON or NIPON which means “Land of the Rising Sun”. This name
was given because of the location of Japan to the east of China, the direction which the
sun rises.
- Consists of 6,852 islands, though only about 430 are inhabited.

Four main Islands


1. Hokkaido
2. Honshu (Tokyo is in the Kanto region of the main island Honshu)
3. Shikoku
4. Kyushu
- The Flag is all white with a red circle representing the sun in its center.
- Japanese is the official and primary language.

Three Characters or Script of Japan


 Hiragana
 Katakana
 Kanji – imported from China (about 8th century CE.)

Japanese Tradition and Culture

1. Japanese Garden
- The garden found in Japanese temples and shrines are inspired by Shinto religion and
belief in ideal state of harmony.
2. Japanese Architecture – traditional Japanese architecture is deeply influenced by Buddhism
and Shintoism.

3. Japanese Tea Ceremony – a ceremony of preparing and offering tea to revered guests is a

- Tofu or soybean-curd – is a popular and healthy dish
- Sushi – rice flavored with vinegar and combined with seafood or sweetened and
sometimes vegetables.
- Sashimi – Cut and sliced raw meat usually seafood.
- Sake – are famous Japanese rice wine is also drunk at traditional meals as a toast to the
health and long life of one’s dining companion.
5. Japanese Kimono
- is a traditional costume or clothing for women. The kimono is actual style with many
different forms; from the usual to the wedding style, all which have a particular meaning
and are wore to different events or occasions.
6. Ikebana
- is a Japanese cultural practice of flower arrangement and believed to have evolved from
the Buddhist practice of offering flowers in the memory of those who have passed away.

7. Geisha
- are famous female traditional entertainers who sing, dance, play traditional Japanese
musical instruments and engage their clients with interesting conversation.
8. Samurai
- was a traditional warrior class in pre-industrial Japan, who were easily recognized as they
were the men allowed to carry two swords.
- were committed to a single daimyo (a wealthy leader)
9. Festivals
- famous festivals such as Aomori Nebuta Festival, The Hadaka Matsuri Festival and
The Cherry Blossom Festival.
