General information
Zenobia July is written by Lisa Bunker and is published in may 21 2019 by Penguin Putnam
Inc. The genre of the book is fiction and mystery. The book has 313 pages without
illustrations.

Summary
Zenobia is a young trans girl from Arizona. She used to live with her father; a single parent
as her mother died young. But because her father had a fatal hunting incident (what could
very well be a suicide) she moved in with her aunts in Maine. In Maine Zenobia goes to a
new middle school; Monarch Middle School. Zenobia is very shy and is anxious about going
to school “as a girl” for the first time but to her relief she quickly is invited to a friend group.
Zenobia has a lot of dysphoria, mostly about her eyebrows, which are made fun of by the
kids at school and she has dysphoria about her body being biologically male. She doesn’t
like looking in the mirror because of that, she only sees a male in the reflection while she
most definitely feels/is female. She doesn’t have any “female clothing” so she’s very happy
when her uncle Sprink (a drag queen) shows up to take her shopping. Zenobia really likes
computers and programming so she didn’t hesitate to help a teacher when a hacker posted
an xenophobic/racist meme on the school website.

Characters
Zenobia July (she/her): A young trans girl who lives with her aunts. She really likes hacking
and does it often. She is pretty introverted but likes to hangout with her friend(s)

Arli (vo/ven/veir): Arli is a young gender queer person from the same school as Zenobia, vo
uses vo/ven/veir pronouns. Arli is a language geek and gives all veir friends nicknames. Vo
lives with veirs dad, veir other parent lives in a camper.

Aunt Phil and aunt Lucy (she/her): Phil and Lucy are a wlw (women loving women) couple,
they took Zenobia in their house and now they have full custody of her.

Chantal/Dyna (she/her): Chantal is also in Zenobia’s friend group together with Arli and a
few other people. Dyna is the name Arli gave to her. Dyna is muslim and gets bullied for that.

Elijah (he/him): Elijah is a trans boy and is also in Arli’s and Zenobia’s friend group.

Melissa (she/her): Melissa is also a friend of Zenobia. She is very religious.

- The story is located in Maine, USA.

- I personally really like this book and I think it’s very important that more books have
this much representation of the lgbtqia+ community.
