PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2
Learning Area
Describes sampling procedure and sample
Topic
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) with code:
Describes sampling procedure and sample (CS_RS12-IIa-c-2)
After the completion of this learning activity sheet, you should be able to:
1. define sampling procedure and sample; and
2. determine the sampling procedure and sample to be used in the study
pen, paper, reading materials
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is the specific procedures or techniques used to
identify, select, process, and analyze information about a topic. In a research paper,
the methodology section allows the reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall
validity and reliability.
Participants/Respondents of the Study
It describes your participants of the study: who they are, what their profile is, where
they are from, etc.
Sampling Technique/Sources of Data
It discusses the process of selecting the participants/respondents of the study. First,
you need to understand the difference between a population and a sample, and
identify the target population of your research. The population is the entire group
that you want to draw conclusions about. The sample is the specific group of
individuals that you will collect data from.
1
There are two (2) types of sampling methods namely probability sampling and non-
probability sampling.
Probability sampling involves random selection, allowing you to make statistical
inferences about the whole group.
Simple random sampling. In a simple random sample, every member of the
population has an equal chance of being selected. Your sampling frame should
include the whole population. To conduct this type of sampling, you can use tools
like random number generators or other techniques that are based entirely on
chance.
Systematic sampling is similar to simple random sampling, but it is usually
slightly easier to conduct. Every member of the population is listed with a number,
but instead of randomly generating numbers, individuals are chosen at regular
intervals.
Stratified sampling involves dividing the population into subpopulations that
may differ in important ways. It allows you draw more precise conclusions by
ensuring that every subgroup is properly represented in the sample.
Cluster sampling also involves dividing the population into subgroups, but
each subgroup should have similar characteristics to the whole sample. Instead of
sampling individuals from each subgroup, you randomly select entire subgroups.
Non-probability sampling involves non-random selection based on convenience or
other criteria, allowing you to easily collect initial data.
General Directions: Read all the parts of this Learning Activity Sheets. If you have
some confusions, you may ask the teacher to clarify those questions.
Activity1. I Can Define You
Directions: Read the situation below. Define sample and sampling procedure based
on how they are used and described in the situation. Write the answer in your
notebook.
Situation:
Miss Anna Aboloc wanted to identify the perception of students towards the
new normal education. Since they are the learning independently at home, Miss is
encouraged to know their opinions about it to be able to craft intervention schemes that
will improve the quality of education despite the pandemic. To accomplish this goal,
2
she conducted a study entitled, “Perception of Students towards Learning in the New
Normal.’’ In this study she will have the students answer a survey questionnaire to
identify their perceptions. Among the (826) total population of Tandag National Science
High School, Miss Aboloc used stratified sampling technique to choose (269) students
that will answer the survey questionnaire. In stratified sampling method, Miss Aboloc
used the Slovin’s Formula to identify the total number of samples by which she
obtained 269, as mentioned. Then she determined the sample distribution percentage
according to the total number of students per grade level.
Question:
Based on the situation given, write a two-sentence paragraph defining sample
and sampling procedure.

Activity 2. Choose the Sample and Sampling Procedure
Directions: Read the abstract below and identify the sample and sampling procedure
used in the study. Write the answer in your notebook.
The study’s objective was to determine the perceptions of Tandag National
Science High School students on Public Display of Affection, accomplished using the
quantitative method, with questionnaire used as data gathering tool. The research
3
instrument was administered to 255 respondents. Stratified random sampling method
was used for the selection from TNSHS. Data obtained were tallied and treated using
frequency count, percentage rank, average weighted mean and one-way Analysis of
Variance (ANOVA). The data gathered were tabulated based on the Likert five-point
categorization scale.
