INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The beginning of the internet as an instrument for communication has now become a tool

for social interaction, education, business and many functions and other activities. The internet

previously one focused by workers in the field of computer technology and internet-based

technology. If you look at the fact (Leyhan, 2011), the author was promoted to that internet that

provides a wide selection, convenient opportunity to enrich and develop one’s life. It is because

the internet allows unlimited sharing of information and also provides a way for an individual to

cooperate and interact with computers worldwide irrespective of time and place.

(Sampath Kumar and Manjunath, 2013) quantitative studies has found that teachers and

research scholars have been using the internet to support their research and teaching. According

to Sushma et al. (2014) the more time spent with the internet the higher the student addiction to

the internet. Moreover, (Rouis, Limidyem, and Sangai, 2011) argued in their research that many

students use Facebook with an extroverted personality can lead to poor academic achievement. It

indicates that the personality of a person while using Facebook play role whether the academic

performance can be achieved or not. Based on (Wardel et al.., 1996) academic performance or

achievements are the result of the study to see how far a student, teacher or institution has

achieve their educational goals. This indicates the impact of the internet on their academic

performance, this refers to how internet resources and services helped students improved

learning, search information to complete their task and other school activities.
This study showed that the time spent on the internet becoming a measure of academic

achievement. The use of internet beyond the time will not be a hint of academic success. The

study was identifying the relationship of the use of the Internet in Grade 12 HUMSS Student’s

Academic Performance.

internet usage and the relation to their academic performance.

Definition of Terms

Academic Achievement. Is the extent to which a student or institution has achieved either

short or long term educational goals. Achievement may be measured through students’ grade

point average, whereas for institutions, achievement may be measured through graduation rates

(TopHat).

In this study, Academic Achievement refers to the first quarter average of HUMSS students.

HUMSS. According to System Plus College Foundation, the Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS) strands equip students with a wide range of discipline with the use of their

experiences and skills into the investigation and inquiry of human situations by studying its

behavior and social changes using empirical, analytical, and critical method techniques.

In this study, HUMSS from school year 2022-2023 refers to the strand of the chosen

participants which data or information of their 1st quarter grade would be collected.

Internet usage. Defined by Law Insider it is any form of electronic communications network

that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world. The

amount of data passing through your computer and the Internet network during a specific time

period is measured (and expressed in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes) as Internet

consumption, according to Videotron.

In this study. Internet usage refers to the hours spent daily of HUMSS students in using

internet.
Conceptual Framework

In this research study, the Internet Usage of Grade 12 HUMSS students of La Castellana

National High School-Senior High is being studied as stated with the following fields in the

Extent of Internet Usage was correlated to their high or low academic performance of the

participants.

Demographic Profile:

Academic Performance

Extend of Internet
Usage

Figure 1: Schematic Diagram illustrating the Conceptual Framework of the study.

The primary focus of this study is to determine the correlation of extent internet usage on the

Grade 12 HUMSS student in terms of their academic performance. The conceptual framework of

the study is illustrated in a schematic diagram wherein the students profile and extent internet

usage are the input and the academic performance is the output of the study.
Theoretical Framework

According to the Theory of Vgotsky in Crawford (1996), the most common online

activities for children and adolescents include playing games, navigating web sites, and

communicating with others (Roberts et al. 2004). While the internet technology evolves rapidly,

current use is associated with visual input and tactile-kinesthetic output via manual manipulation

of peripheral devices. During Internet use, language centers of the brain are active, particularly in

online communication. Meta-cognitive abilities are required for a variety of online activities

including playing games and navigating web sites. Internet games as well as synchronous

communication increase cognitive processing speed (i.e., reaction time). Internet games require

simultaneous processing; online communication requires successive processing. Internet games

make extreme demands on visual and meta cognition skills. Navigating web sites builds

knowledge base and contributes to concept development. Figure 1 presents a theoretical

framework for organizing the cognitive requirements of typical online behavior in children and

adolescents. Such requirements, when satisfied, contribute to patterns of neurological activity

which, particularly early in life, influence neurological architecture and cognitive processes.

According to Vygostsky (1978), human cognition creates tools and then, in turn, is

influenced by those tools. The Internet is the most sophisticated tool that humans have yet to

create and, as such, it may ultimately have greater cognitive impact than any previous cultural

tool. As always, ner technology as associated the with apprehension and anxiety. For example, in

the 19th century, “the telegraph enable a young woman, againts her Father’s wishes, to maintain a

flirtation with a number of men on the wire” (Quigley and Blashki, 2003, p.311).

The majority of households currently have Internet access and those that do not

disproportionately characterized by low socioeconomic status. “In 1998, 74% of Canadian

households in the highest-income group had computers, compared to only 18% of households in

the lowest-income group” (Canadian Council on Social Development, 200 p.4). The majority of

children and youth spend a significant amount of time online and those that do not are

disproportionately characterized by low socioeconomic status (National Center for Educational

Statistics, 2003). Current anxiety surrounding children’s Internet use should be for those whose

cognitive processes are not influence by the cultural tool (Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation,

2004).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

Existence today would be unimaginable without technology. Life is made simpler by

modern innovations. Most individuals, particularly professionals and students, make extensive

use of contemporary technologies. One of these current technologies is what is known as the

"Internet." The Internet is referred to as the "ocean of information." It is quite beneficial,

particularly for a person's commercial and academic goals. It is made up of several commercial,

public, and government networks, both local and worldwide in scale, that are linked by a diverse

set of electrical, wireless, and optical networking technologies. According to Turel and

Muhammet (2015), the internet was introduced to academic institutions as a tool to enhance

student’s academic experience in the mid - 1990s because of its potential to operate as support

medium for many tasks for which people utilize it. Internet access has greatly increased over the

previous several decades and is now available in a variety of locations, including homes,

business, travel and schools. This study aims to determine the association or relationship

between internet usage and academic performance of students.

Foreign Studies

Machine learning algorithms are used to predict academic success based on internet
usage trends.

This study attempts to reveal the association between Internet usage behaviors and academic

performance, and to predict undergraduate`s academic performance from the usage data by

machine learning. A set of features, including online duration, Internet traffic volume, and

connection frequency, were extracted, calculated and normalized from the real Internet usage
data of 4000 students. The results show that Internet usage data are capable of differentiating and

predicting student`s academic performance.

The Internet use of university students and its associations with academic success,

interpersonal interactions, psychological adjustment, and self-evaluation

The purpose of this study was to look at the links between university students` Internet use

and their academic performance, interpersonal connections, psychosocial adjustment, and self-

evaluation. On a number of parameters, heavy Internet users and nonheavy Internet users

differed significantly. Nonheavy Internet users had better relationships with administrative staff,

higher academic grades, and higher levels of learning satisfaction than heavy Internet users.

Local Studies
Internet use, outcomes and the regulation in the Philippines

This study applies the Uses and Gratification (U&G) Theory (Palmgreen et al., 1985) as a

frame in developing a taxonomy of Internet use as well as outcomes of Internet use in a

collectivist and developing society such as the Philippines. Further, it seeks to contribute to

theory by extending the U&G theory by examining the role of regulation in predicting outcomes

of Internet use. and society. This study expands the Uses and Gratification Theory by examining

Internet use and its outcomes among Filipino Internet users. It also tests the Social Cognitive

Theory by examining the role of both self and external regulation on Internet use outcomes. The

study was done in two phases. In the first phase, interviews were conducted to elicit how the

Internet is used as well as perceptions of healthy versus problematic Internet use. In the second

phase, surveys were administered to 387 respondents from all over the Philippines. Results

revealed that purposes or activities using the Internet can be grouped into seven factors, namely
basic Internet use, entertainment, expression and interaction, e-commerce, school-related, and

technological deviance. This study utilized mixed methods through a sequential exploratory

strategy, involving two phases. In the first phase, qualitative data were obtained through semi-

structured interviews to elicit the usage and outcomes of Internet use. In the second phase, a

quantitative survey was constructed and administered to identify the taxonomies and establish

the relationship between usage, outcomes and self-regulation. To summarize, the results reveal a

seven-component taxonomy of Internet use in the Philippines: expression and interaction, basic

Internet use, recreation, news and information, school-related activities, e-commerce, and

technology deviance. In addition, whereas past studies tended to focus on problematic outcomes

of Internet, the study highlights both positive and negative outcomes. Results show that Internet

use has benefits including greater productivity and personal enhancement. However, when

carried to the extreme, Internet use can also lead to social harm and addictive tendencies.

The effect of Internet on Students’ studies

This paper is a literature review on effects of internet use on students’ academic

performance. Assessing to factors that affect students’ use of the internet is the main objective of

this research. The paper additionally aims to find out the various activities that students use the

internet to do and assess the various technologies students use to access the internet. Several

articles were reviewed by the researcher. Articles reviewed were all on factors influencing

students’ use of the internet. The internet has a vital impact on student academic outcomes as it

helps students to access journals and articles which otherwise are not made available in the

libraries. The study concluded that increase in internet use was very useful in the improvement of

the learning outcomes. The study also found the negative impacts of internet use which leads to

distraction as time is spent on social media instead on studies. Therefore, it is proposed that
University authorities should provide guidelines to help students overcome some of the

challenges faced when using the [Link] purpose of the study was to investigate the

literature review on the impact of internet use on students learning outcomes. From the findings,

the internet is very useful in the learning outcomes of students, however there are several

negative impacts that can cause students to decline in their learning outcomes and therefore they

have to set time boundaries for themselves when using the internet and authorities should assist

students to overcome some of the challenges faced by students in learning electronically with the

internet.

According to the research, the use of internet by student adversely affecting performance

negatively is most found in male students rather than females. This is based on behavior of male

students as they are more active and spend time on the internet as compared to the females.

Extroverted personality can lead to poor learning outcomes, also the study demonstrates that

student who spends more than six (6) hours on the internet have Extroverted personality can lead

to poor learning outcomes, also the study demonstrates that student who spends more than six (6)

hours on the internet have higher CGPA since they do more research on the internet to expand

their information and promote examination preparation. The internet allows students to access

more information, one of the several advantages that student retrieve any kind of information

they wish to know from the internet through internet search engines example, Google search and

also makes assignment flexible for students.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study used the correlational design to analyze the relationship between internet usage

and academic performance of students. It provided the summaries and other critical information

regarding study samples and measures (Kotha, 2004). According to McBury and White (2009),

this type of research method appropriate for the aforementioned topic because in conducting this

study, the researcher is required to collect data based on the behavior or attitudes of the

participants.

Participants of the Study

The participants of the study are three hundred seventy-two (372) Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS) students of La Castellana National High School-Senior High for school year

2022-2023. The researchers used the stratified sampling technique to identify the participants of

the study. Below is the distribution of the total number of the participants.

Sampling Design

The total population of students enrolled in Grade 12 HUMSS in La Castellana National

High School-Senior High in the school year 2022-2023 is three hundred seventy-two (372). The

respondents came from eight sections.

The sample size was determined through slovens formula: n= where: n= number
1+ 2
of samples, N = total population and e + margin of error (0.05). Thus, the sample size is one

hundred sixty-four (164) out of three hundred seventy-two (372) in Grade 12 HUMSS students in

La Castellana National High School – Senior High. By using using the sloven’s formula, the

sample size is one hundred ninety-four (194) but since our questionnaire is self made, thirty (30)

students were taken off for the pilot testing.

In order to obtain the distribution, the researcher used the stratified sampling wherein the

whole sample population is divided into subgroup or strata according to sex and section. The

main purpose of this sampling is to ensure specific subgroups are present in their sample. It also

helps obtain precise estimates of each group’s characteristics.

males and ten (10) females. As for sections Aristocracy,Geography and Linguistics, it is

composed of eight (8) males and 12 (females). The participants coming from section Cognition

and Demography has both seven (7) males and fourteen (14) females. Lastly, section

Jurisprudence has ten (10) males and thirteen (13) females.

Research Instrument

The instrument that was used to gather the necessary data and information has three-part

questionnaire given to each participant. This instrument was utilized with a self-made research

instrument.

The first part was used to obtain the profile data if each participant in terms of sex and

section. The second part covers questions that attained the data in analyzing and questions about

the level of internet usage. The second part of this research instrument was composed of two

questions, the average time the respondent spends on internet a day and the prevalent reason of

the participants in using the internet. Furthermore, the last part of the questionnaire was

composed of a table of which it is answerable by a check mark depending on the chosen

participant’s choices which will measure the level of internet usage of each participant.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data-gathering procedures is an integral part of a research study that shows the process

in obtaining the data and information as well as the results of the project. This research

instrument was pilot tested because it was a self-created questionnaire that requires validity and

reliability.

First, the researchers wrote a request permission to the principal to perform the [Link]

the principal approved the letter, a second letter was sent to the various section advisors of

HUMSS students requesting permission for the researchers to undertake the research. The goal

and objectives of the study was stated in the letter that was delivered to the various section

advisers of HUMSS students. As a result, another letter was delivered to the respondents
informing them of the study's progress. As consent was given, the researchers disseminated the

survey questions personally.

The participants was allotted one day to fill the survey. From that, all information was

analyzed, categorized, and tallied.

Data Analysis Procedures

The descriptive and relational aspects of the study relied heavily on statistical tools frequently

used in most statistical analysis. More specifically, the objective of the study were guided by the

following data analysis procedures.

For problem number 1, frequency and percentage were used to describe the profile of

students when grouped according to sex and section.

For problem number 2, frequency and percentage were used to determine what is the

prevalent reason of the participants in using the internet.

For problem number 3 ,mean and standard deviation is used to determine the average time

(in hour) the participant spent on the internet a day.

For problem number 4, mean and standard deviation is used to determine the level of

internet usage of the participants in terms of sex and section. Interpretation is based on the table
