Calculating Magnification

The document contains calculations of magnification and specimen size using scale bars from microscope images. It provides examples of calculating magnification by comparing the scale bar length on a microscope image to the actual scale bar length. It also demonstrates calculating specimen sizes in original units by taking the measured specimen length on a ruler, dividing by the scale bar length on the ruler, and multiplying by the scale bar length in the microscope image. Width calculations are shown using the same approach, dividing the measured width by the magnification to determine the original width.

ACTIVITY: Calculating Magnification.

1. Calculate magnification.
Scale bar length in mm (ruler): 53 mm.
Scale bar length in um: 53*1000 = 53000 um.
Image scale bar length: 20 um.
Magnification: 53000/20 = x 2650.
2. Calculate specimen size.
Specimen length (ruler): 56 mm.
Scale bar length (ruler): 3 mm.
Scale bar original image length: 50 nm.
Specimen size using scale bars: 56 mm/3 mm = 18.667 scale bars.
Specimen size in units: 18.667*50 nm = 933.35 nm.
3. Calculate specimen size.
Specimen length (ruler): 62 mm.
Scale bar length (ruler): 21 mm.
Scale bar original image length: 20 um.
Specimen size using scale bars: 62 mm/21 mm = 2.95 scale bars
Specimen size in units: 2.95*20 um = 59 um.
4. Calculate width.
Magnification: x 2500.
Specimen width in mm (ruler): 35 mm.
Specimen width in um: 35*1000 = 35000 um.
Specimen original width: 35000 um/2500 = 14 um
5. Calculate width.
Magnification: x 20000.
Specimen width in mm (ruler): 65 mm.
Specimen width in um: 65*1000 = 65000 um.
Specimen original width: 65000 um/20000 = 3.25 um.
