1 There are two Btu units: Btu (IT), International Steam Table and Btu (th), thermochemical. This book uses only the more
commonly used Btu (IT). (1 Btu (th) = 0.99933 Btu (IT).) There are multiple calorie units but this appendix uses only
the thermochemical calorie, cal (th). For equivalency between defined units, see Thompson, A., and Taylor, B.N., Guide
for the Use of the International System of Units (SI), NIST Special Publication 811,1995 Edition, National Institute of
Science and Technology, Bethesda, MD, 2018, [Link]/pml/special-publication-811 (Retrieved April 2019).

1. Use the gas-specific gravity and Figure B.28 to determine the pseudocritical temperature,
Tc, and pressure, Pc. If only gas composition is known, compute molar mass of gas and
divide by 28.9625 to obtain specific gravity.
2. Compute pseudoreduced temperature TR = (t[°F] + 460)/Tc) and pressure PR = P(psia)/Pc.
3. Read compressibility factor from Figure B.29.
The critical temperature and pressure lines on Figure B.28 can be computed using:
Tc ( ° R ) = 170.8 + 311SpGr
and
As noted in the figure captions, the correlations are not valid at high acid gas concentrations. The
Engineering Data Book (2016b) provides a method applicable to high-hydrogen sulfide concen-
trations. For best results, computer programs with equations of state that properly predict phase
behavior of sour gases should be used.
