ACTIVE AND INERT INGREDIENTS
The active ingredient in Clorox household bleach
is sodium hypochlorite, which bleaches, removes
stains, and disinfects. Sodium chloride (salt),
which thickens and stabilizes the solution, is
another chemical constituent in Clorox. Sodium
carbonate (washing soda) is an alkaline cleaning
agent that dissolves alcohol and grease stains.
Another alkaline cleaning chemical that dissolves
fatty, oily, or acidic stains is sodium hydroxide
(lye). Sodium polyacrylate is a surfactant that
keeps loosened soils from re-depositing on
fabrics during the washing process.
PROPERTY OF SODIUM
HYPOCHLORITE
Sodium hypochlorite is a clear, yellowish
solution with a distinct odor. The relative density
of sodium hypochlorite (5,5% alkaline phase) is 1.
It contains approximately 5% sodium
hypochlorite as a bleaching agent for household
usage (with a pH of around 11, it is irritating).
