WHY PULSED EDDY CURRENTS?

 PEC is a versatile corrosion screening tool:

 Inspection through insulated structures

 Works through aluminum, stainless or
galvanized steel weather jackets
 Detects far and near side corrosion
 Wall thicknesses up to 100mm (4in)
 Liftoff/insulation/coating thicknesses up to
300 mm (12 in)
 Resists to LO variations of up to 50%
 Works on operating equipment running at up
to Currie temperature
 Safe and efficient deployment

PEC WORKING PRINCIPLES

The footprint represents the surface area seen by the probe

 Used to set grid resolution

 Used to evaluate the minimum detectable defect size

Footprint increases with increasing:

• Probe size –6 dB
(50%)

• Liftoff or Coating/Insulation thickness FP

• Component wall thickness

PEC WORKING PRINCIPLES

Smallest detectable defect:

 Defect volume > 15% of footprint volume

 This is valid is valid for defects covering at least 1 3 of the FP’s surface

Example:
PEC-089-G2 probe + 50.8 mm (2 in) insulation, FP approx. 95 mm (3.75 in)

PEC WORKING PRINCIPLES

The Averaging area (AA):

 The AA is the total area seen by the probe

 PEC measures the average wall thickness within the AA:
 Defect larger than the AA are sized with +/- 10% accuracy
 Defect smaller than the AA are undersized
 AA = 1.8xFP

PEC WORKING PRINCIPLES

The compensated wall thickness (CWT) is a unique post processing tool to accurately size
small defects

 The actual signal is a composition of nominal wall + defect signals

 The CWT uses the known nominal and actual signals to extract the defect curve.

GALVANIZED STEEL PROBE

 Galvanized steel (GS) weather jackets have been a
tough challenge for PEC.
 Unique to Eddyfi; the patent pending specialized GS
probe is design to:

 Improve the Mag. field penetration and the SNR

 Reduce the probe footprint
 Improve detection and sizing accuracy
 Support wall thicknesses up to 38 mm (1.5 in).
 Support insulation thicknesses up to 152mm (6
in).
 Support GS jacket thicknesses up to 1mm
(0.04in).

PEC/PECA — EXPERIMENTAL INSPECTION TIME

Full coverage of a 200 mm (8 in) OD pipe with 50 mm (2 in) insulation.
Pipe length: 24.3 m (80 ft)
1) 2)

1)
2)
3)
4)
PECA is about 9 time faster than a single-element probe in grid mode.
3) 4)
Competing systems only supports a slower grid mode

This experiment was not designed to favor PECA:

- Three passes are necessary to cover the pipe circumference.

- The last pass overlaps the first by more than 127 mm (5 in).
